{"id":40021,"date":"2014-02-24T12:00:31","date_gmt":"2014-02-24T12:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=40021"},"modified":"2015-05-05T22:11:04","modified_gmt":"2015-05-05T21:11:04","slug":"truth-versus-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2014\/02\/truth-versus-power\/","title":{"rendered":"Truth versus Power"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Henry David Thoreau said<br \/>\n\u201cRather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth\u201d.<br \/>\nWhy did Thoreau prefer truth to all else?<br \/>\nDoes not money deserve to be worshiped?<br \/>\nDoes not fame deserve to be worshiped?<br \/>\nDoes not power deserve to be worshiped?<br \/>\nI think that I agree with Thoreau,<br \/>\nExcept, that I might sometimes prefer love to truth.<\/p>\n<p>But to me, power seems ugly,<br \/>\nBecause power means coercion.<br \/>\nIt means making another person do something<br \/>\nBy force or by threats.<br \/>\nThe power of armies is ugly.<br \/>\nThe power of governments is often ugly,<br \/>\nWhen they are not guided by ethics,<br \/>\nWhen they are not guided by truth.<\/p>\n<p>A good friend said to me,<br \/>\n\u201cWhat power do NGO&#8217;s have?\u201d<br \/>\nI answered. \u201cNo power at all<br \/>\nThey only have truth.<br \/>\nAnd NGO&#8217;s must criticize governments,<br \/>\nWhen they are not guided by compassion,<br \/>\nWhen they are not guided by ethics<br \/>\nWhen they are not guided by truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A good friend said to me,<br \/>\n\u201cIs not truth often painful?\u201d<br \/>\nI answered \u201cYes it is often painful,<br \/>\nBut pain can be our friend,<br \/>\nPain tells us to withdraw our hand<br \/>\nSo that a fire will not burn it.<br \/>\nPain tells us to withdraw our folly,<br \/>\nSo that our beautiful world will not burn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A good friend said to me,<br \/>\n\u201cBelieve this and you will be happy,<br \/>\nBelieve this or you will suffer,<br \/>\nBelieve this or you will be punished\u201d<br \/>\nI answered, \u201cWhere is the evidence?<br \/>\nI answered, \u201cWhere is the logic?<br \/>\nIf there is good evidence and logic,<br \/>\nThen I will believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A good friend said to me,<br \/>\n\u201cBelieve this because everyone believes it\u201d<br \/>\nI answered \u201cI am myself.<br \/>\nI have my own truth.<br \/>\nCrowds often have been wrong.<br \/>\nMultitudes have rushed down false paths.<br \/>\nI will not follow them.<br \/>\nI will be guided by compassion and truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A good friend said to me,<br \/>\n\u201cYou are standing alone.<br \/>\nYou are only one person.<br \/>\nYou have so little power!\u201d<br \/>\nI answered, \u201cI am not alone.<br \/>\nMany people can see the truth,<br \/>\nTogether we can change the world.<br \/>\nIn the end, truth and love will win\u201d<br \/>\n________________________________<\/p>\n<p><em>John Scales Avery, Ph.D. is a member of the TRANSCEND Network and Associate Professor Emeritus at the H.C. \u00d8rsted Institute, University of Copenhagen, Denmark.
