She was crushed to death while trying to stop an Israeli Defense Forces armored bulldozer from demolishing Palestinian homes in Rafah, in the occupied Gaza Strip. This poem is dedicated to her, <\/i>in memoriam<i>.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Barely a woman, twenty three years old&#8211;<br \/>\nSoft, vulnerable\u2026. Surely, the Monster<br \/>\nWill stop in its tracks!<\/p>\n<p>She steels her will,<br \/>\nThinks of the tank in Tiananmen Square&#8211;<br \/>\nOne little man stopping a tank!<\/p>\n<p>Surely,<br \/>\nThey will perceive her love-resolve:<br \/>\nTo die in a great cause is to mortar&#8211;<br \/>\nNot martyr&#8211;the Cause!<\/p>\n<p>She must not die!<br \/>\nCannot break her parents&#8217; hearts&#8211;<br \/>\nBack home! (She sees them now!)<br \/>\nIf only they knew<br \/>\nHow she had grown!<\/p>\n<p>They would understand\u2026<br \/>\nThis other love that held her now<br \/>\nIn place, this love of home and place,<br \/>\nAnd the Other,<br \/>\nOf the faces, the voices, the laughter&#8230;<br \/>\nOlive groves and sun-scented skin;<br \/>\nThe love she&#8217;d found for dispossessed:<br \/>\nChildren, fathers, mothers&#8211;also of her,<br \/>\nBelonging to her, because<br \/>\nEveryone suffering was One.<\/p>\n<p>It was hard to explain&#8230; but the Monster<br \/>\nTruck was coming now&#8211;remorseless Caterpillar,<br \/>\nSci-fi bulldozer to scoop her up!<\/p>\n<p>It would stop in its tracks!<br \/>\nBecause a man drove it!<br \/>\nA man who would see her,<br \/>\nIn her orange jacket<br \/>\nLike a bumble bee!<\/p>\n<p>He would see she had to<br \/>\nDo it\u2014stand there in its way<br \/>\n(Though its iron mouth gaped,<br \/>\nThough its hard lips snarled.)<\/p>\n<p>To save their houses, olive groves&#8230; to save<br \/>\nHerself!
