\nHistory may condemn me as a cop-out artist.
\nI’d condemn myself, but NATO assures me
\nthat civilian casualties are an unavoidable cost
\nthat must be paid, that their sacrifice
\nwill be consecrated by peace.
\nSo I envision erecting a shrine for each martyr
\nconstructed of rubble and missile scrap.
\nI do not anticipate the victims’ resurrection
\nor my own. What I expect is
\nthat we will repeat this pageant,
\nthat it will become our state religion,
\nand I’ll become a whiskey priest.
