{"id":43319,"date":"2014-06-02T12:00:20","date_gmt":"2014-06-02T11:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=43319"},"modified":"2015-05-05T21:33:48","modified_gmt":"2015-05-05T20:33:48","slug":"greenpeace-blocks-two-major-oil-rigs-to-save-the-arctic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2014\/06\/greenpeace-blocks-two-major-oil-rigs-to-save-the-arctic\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenpeace Blocks Two Major Oil Rigs to \u2018Save the Arctic\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>In the early hours of Tuesday [27 May 2014] morning, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/en\/press\/releases\/Activists-block-two-major-drilling-rigs-in-24-hours-as-Save-the-Arctic-campaign-escalates\/\" >Greenpeace activists from 12 countries blocked two separate oil rigs<\/a> destined for offshore drilling in the Arctic Ocean.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/greenpeace-bloks-oil-rigs-arctic.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43320 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/greenpeace-bloks-oil-rigs-arctic.jpg\" alt=\"greenpeace bloks oil rigs arctic\" width=\"650\" height=\"434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/greenpeace-bloks-oil-rigs-arctic.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/greenpeace-bloks-oil-rigs-arctic-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Arctic matters to us all, and protecting it demands a truly global response,\u201d said\u00a0Ben Ayliffe, a\u00a0Greenpeace International campaigner.\u00a0\u201cWe cannot let a reckless club of international oil companies hunt for the last drops as the ice melts away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the Dutch port of IJmuiden, a\u00a0group of 30 activists from Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy and the Netherlands\u00a0scaled and occupied the GSP Saturn, an\u00a0oil rig contracted by Gazprom, Russia\u2019s state-owned energy company, where they unfurled a banner reading, \u201cSave the Arctic.\u201d After five hours, officials removed and detained the activists.<\/p>\n<p>In the Norwegian Arctic, a group of 15 Greenpeace activists from Norway, Finland, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Fiji, UK and the Philippines\u00a0occupied the Transocean Spitsbergen, an oil rig contracted by Norway\u2019s state owned company, Statoil, as it prepares to drill the world\u2019s northernmost well in the Barents Sea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/02\/28\/shell-abandons-arctic-drilling\/\" >Shell has already shown just how difficult it is to work in the U.S. Arctic<\/a>, where extreme cold and remote conditions led to a series of embarrassing failures,\u201d said Ayliffe. \u201cOver five million people are now telling these companies that Arctic drilling\u00a0isn\u2019t worth the risk, either to the environment or their own reputation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greenpeace is calling for a ban on offshore oil drilling and unsustainable industrial fishing in the Arctic, as well as a protected sanctuary around the North Pole.\u00a0Last September, a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/09\/19\/25-arrested-by-armed-russian-coast-guards-following-arctic-oil-drilling-protest\/\" >Greenpeace protest against Arctic drilling<\/a> at a\u00a0Gazprom oil platform in the Pechora Sea was apprehended by Russian forces who arrested and imprisoned the 30 participating activists.
