{"id":43577,"date":"2014-06-02T12:00:36","date_gmt":"2014-06-02T11:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=43577"},"modified":"2015-05-05T21:33:47","modified_gmt":"2015-05-05T20:33:47","slug":"advergames-new-tricks-to-sell-junk-food-to-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2014\/06\/advergames-new-tricks-to-sell-junk-food-to-children\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cAdvergames\u201d: New Tricks to Sell Junk Food to Children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.channel4.com\/news\/mobile-phone-smartphone-game-app-junk-food-advertising-ban\" >Channel 4 News<\/a>, UK, reports on the new trend to circumvent legislation brought in to limit the typo of advertising that can be directed to children. \u201cCompanies including McDonald\u2019s and Coca-Cola should be stopped from designing apps and online games that advertise their products directly to children, according to a leading marketing academic. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.channel4.com\/programmes\/dispatches\/episode-guide\/series-142\/episode-1\" >Channel 4 Dispatches<\/a> has found that junk food companies are exploiting a legal loophole to design games on smartphones, tablets and computers targeted at children. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/management\/faculty\/haiming-hang.html\" >Dr Haiming Hang<\/a> of the University of Bath told the Daily Telegraph the practice raises \u201cfundamental questions\u201d\u2026.\u201dCompanies are manipulating children into wanting food and drinks that are high in salt, sugar and fat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/European_Union\" >European Union<\/a> has framework legislation in place which sets down minimum provisions on advertising to children for its 27 member states. It includes, amongst other points \u201cProduct placement is not allowed in children\u2019s programs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smartphones and tables are given to children by parents who would otherwise keep a close eye on what they are watching on TV, without realising that the innocent looking games have all kinds of invitations and rewards planted by the junk food industry.
