Credit: U.S. Department of Agriculture<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Over the past winter\u2014a season when honeybee hives are most vulnerable\u2014the U.S. lost 23.2 percent of its hive honeybee population. That is lower than the previous winter\u2019s 30.5 percent death rate, but the cumulative impact on honeybee populations over the past eight years poses a major threat to their long-term survival, as well as the country\u2019s agricultural productivity, the USDA said.<\/p>\n<p>Roughly one-quarter of U.S. crops depend on honeybees for pollination. \u201cYearly fluctuations in the rate of losses like these only demonstrate how complicated the whole issue of honey bee heath has become,\u201d said a USDA researcher, citing factors such as viruses, pathogens, and pesticides.<\/p>\n<p>One class of pesticides in particular, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2012\/05\/09\/report-weight-of-evidence-links-pesticides-to-colony-collapse-disorder\/\" >neonicotinoids<\/a>, has been implicated in honeybee deaths.
