{"id":45795,"date":"2014-08-11T12:00:07","date_gmt":"2014-08-11T11:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=45795"},"modified":"2015-05-05T21:30:46","modified_gmt":"2015-05-05T20:30:46","slug":"they-made-them-do-it-what-if-the-children-dying-in-gaza-were-jews","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2014\/08\/they-made-them-do-it-what-if-the-children-dying-in-gaza-were-jews\/","title":{"rendered":"They Made Them Do It&#8230;. &#8211; What If the Children Dying in Gaza Were Jews?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Let\u2019s do a thought experiment and imagine that the Arabs had gotten the better of the Israelis in the 1948 Arab\u2013Israeli War and after years of conflict, all that was left of Israel was the Gaza strip.<\/p>\n<p>Assume for a moment that instead of Palestinians, over 1.8 million Jews were crammed into the 11 mile Gaza strip and the state of Palestine, subsidized and supported by a superpower, was administering the calories to the Jews in Gaza, keeping them to a limit of\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2012\/oct\/17\/israeli-military-calorie-limit-gaza\" >2,300<\/a>\u00a0a day.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine that instead of Palestinian children, it was Jewish children living under a Palestinian embargo that\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/print-edition\/news\/amira-hass-israel-bans-books-music-and-clothes-from-entering-gaza-1.276147\" >denied<\/a>\u00a0them toys, books, music and until a few years ago, even\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.foreignpolicy.com\/posts\/2009\/02\/25\/israel_denied_pasta_to_gaza\" >pasta<\/a>. \u00a0How do you think the world would react? \u00a0Imagine if it were\u00a0<em>Palestinian<\/em>\u00a0commandos who had assaulted a peaceful cargo ship attempting to break the embargo to bring supplies to\u00a0<em>Jews\u00a0<\/em>in Gaza, killing nine, including one American. \u00a0 Do you think 85 US Senators would have signed a\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/blog-briefing-room\/news\/105093-87-senators-defend-israel-in-flotilla-incident?page=1\" >letter<\/a>\u00a0supporting the embargo on Gaza and the deadly attack on the cargo ship if that ship had been on a humanatarian mission to help\u00a0<em>Jews<\/em>\u00a0in Gaza?<\/p>\n<p>NBC correspondent \u00a0Ayman Mohyeldin\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/storyline\/middle-east-unrest\/innocent-gone-israeli-strike-gaza-kills-four-children-n157301\" >reported<\/a>\u00a0first hand the death of four boys playing on the beach in Gaza. \u00a0\u201cThe attack \u2013 and its heartrending aftermath \u2013 was witnessed by NBC News. Moments earlier, the boys were playing soccer with journalists on the beach. \u00a0The four victims were named as Ahed Atef Bakr and Zakaria Ahed Bakr, both 10 years old, Mohamed Ramez Bakr, 11, and Ismael Mohamed Bakr, 9.\u201d \u00a0Ayman Mohyeldin, who is Egyptian-American, was later ordered by NBC to leave Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>Glenn Greenwald<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/firstlook.org\/theintercept\/2014\/07\/17\/nbc-removes-ayman-mohyeldin-gaza-coverage-witnesses-israeli-beach-killing-four-boys\/\" >\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0that, \u201cnumerous NBC employees, including some of the network\u2019s highest-profile stars, were\u2026indignant,\u201d and that Mohyeldin had been removed from Gaza allegedly due to pressure from Neo-con quarters which claimed Mohyeldin had been soft on Hamas.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s almost impossible to imagine that Mohyeldin would have been replaced if he had been reporting on the death of four Jewish youngsters at the hands of a Palestinian gunboat. \u00a0What we see repeatedly in Gaza is how the media values Palestinian lives differently than Israeli ones.<\/p>\n<p>The day after the attack,\u00a0Samantha Power, US ambassador to the United Nations, began her\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/mondoweiss.net\/2014\/08\/selected-writings-samantha.html\" >comments\u00a0<\/a>this way:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States is deeply concerned about the rocket attacks by Hamas and the dangerous escalation of hostilities in the region. In particular, we are concerned about the devastating impact of this crisis on both Israeli and Palestinian civilians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/ayman2-twitter-israel-palestine-gaza-children-dead.png\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-45796\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/ayman2-twitter-israel-palestine-gaza-children-dead.png\" alt=\"ayman2 twitter israel palestine gaza children dead\" width=\"620\" height=\"364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/ayman2-twitter-israel-palestine-gaza-children-dead.png 620w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/ayman2-twitter-israel-palestine-gaza-children-dead-300x176.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unimaginable that if a Hamas rocket had landed in a park and killed four Israeli children that Ms. Power would have begun her remarks this way:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States is deeply concerned about the Israeli incursion into Gaza and the dangerous escalation of hostilities in the region\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Why is this inconceivable? \u00a0Because Ms. Power and the government she represents support Israeli apartheid and simply do not value the lives of Palestinian children the same way they value the lives of Israeli children.<\/p>\n<p>As reported by\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/tv.msn.com\/tv\/article.aspx?news=878280\" >MSN<\/a>, CNN reporter Diana Magnay was removed from Gaza because:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMagnay was reporting live on the air as a group watched the Israeli bombardment of Gaza around her. After the report was over, she wrote on Twitter: \u2018Israelis on hill above Sderot cheer as bombs land on #gaza; threaten to \u2018destroy our car if I say a word wrong.\u2019 Scum.\u2019 \u00a0CNN said in a statement Friday that Magnay was referring specifically to those who threatened her. CNN said the network and Magnay are sorry if anyone was offended. \u00a0The network said Magnay has been reassigned to Moscow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If the people on the hill above her had been Arabs cheering on a Palestinian artillery battery hammering Jews, would Ms. Magnay have been reassigned to Moscow for calling those who threatened her \u2018scum\u2019? \u00a0Unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>World renowned Israeli novelist Amos Oz, who supports the war\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/news-desk\/honest-voice-israel?src=mp\" >calling<\/a>\u00a0it \u201cjustified, but excessive\u201d, asked the following questions during an interview to explain why he supports the Israeli offensive:<\/p>\n<p>QUESTION 1: What would you do if your neighbor across the street sits down on the balcony, puts his little boy on his lap, and starts shooting machine-gun fire into your nursery?<\/p>\n<p>QUESTION 2: What would you do if your neighbor across the street digs a tunnel from his nursery to your nursery in order to blow up your home or in order to kidnap your family?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the question for Mr. Oz should be: \u00a0What would you do if your entire neighborhood was forced to live in a giant outdoor prison where your children were denied books, toys and forced to live on a bare minimum of calories? \u00a0 Would you fight back? \u00a0Would your rhetoric become extreme?<\/p>\n<p>Over 400 hundred Palestinian children have been killed during the current fighting in Gaza, children who during their short lives had been denied the basic necessities for having committed the crime of being born in the land of their ancestors. \u00a0No one had more of a right to live in Palestine than did those children, yet Bob Scheifer of CBS News\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/mondoweiss.net\/2014\/08\/schieffer-world-gone.html\" >said<\/a>\u00a0the following:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the Middle East, the Palestinian people find themselves in the grip of a terrorist group that has embarked on a strategy to get its own children killed in order to build sympathy for its cause \u2013 a strategy that might actually be working at least in some quarters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scheifer can only blame the Palestinians for \u2018provoking\u2019 the IDF.<\/p>\n<p>Of course in Europe, the coverage is somewhat more balanced, but Roger Cohen of the\u00a0<em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/08\/03\/opinion\/sunday\/roger-cohen-why-americans-see-israel-the-way-they-do.html\" >NY Times<\/a><\/em>let\u2019s us know what\u2019s behind that. \u00a0He begins by quoting poet James Lasdun, \u201cThere is something uncannily adaptive about anti-Semitism: the way it can hide, unsuspected, in the most progressive minds.\u201d \u00a0Then Cohen continues, \u201c\u2026the war has also suggested how the virulent anti-Israel sentiment now evident among the bien-pensant European left can create a climate that makes violent hatred of Jews permissible once again.\u201d \u00a0What Mr. Cohen is saying is that if one applies the full measure of moral outrage towards the Israeli slaughter of children, as the Europeans are doing and the Americans refuse to do, then you are toying with anti-Semitism of the National Socialist variety.<\/p>\n<p>A good example of Cohen\u2019s logic at work was when Jimmy Carter used the word \u2018apartheid\u2019 to describe the situation in Gaza and was\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.counterpunch.org\/2006\/12\/28\/the-ludicrous-attacks-on-jimmy-carter-s-book\/\" >branded<\/a>\u00a0\u201ddangerous and anti-Semitic\u201d for simply stating the obvious.<\/p>\n<p>While there has been some limited criticism from the United States regarding the Israeli invasion, no one should doubt who is calling the shots in the US\/Israeli relationship. \u00a0During the last conflict in Gaza in 2009, Condolezza Rice was going to vote for a UN resolution calling for a cease fire but Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert would have nothing of it. \u00a0He explained what happened in a\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2009\/jan\/13\/israelandthepalestinians-us-olmert-bush\" >speech<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we saw that the secretary of state, for reasons we did not really understand, wanted to vote in favour of the UN resolution \u2026 I looked for President Bush and they told me he was in Philadelphia making a speech. I said, \u2018I don\u2019t care. I have to talk to him now\u2019. They got him off the podium, brought him to another room and I spoke to him. I told him, \u2018You can\u2019t vote in favour of this resolution.\u2019 He said, \u2018Listen, I don\u2019t know about it, I didn\u2019t see it, I\u2019m not familiar with the phrasing.\u2019 He gave an order to the secretary of state and she did not vote in favour of it \u2013 a resolution she cooked up, phrased, organised and maneuvered for.
