Photo: Sandy Young\/Getty Images\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/obama-nobel-laureate.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/obama-nobel-laureate-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-48014\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">President Barack Obama makes a speech during the Nobel Peace Prize Concert at Oslo Spektrum on December 11, 2009 in Oslo, Norway.<br \/>Photo: Sandy Young\/Getty Images<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>23 Sep 2014 &#8211; <\/em>The U.S. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/09\/24\/world\/middleeast\/us-isis-syria.html?hp&amp;action=click&amp;pgtype=Homepage&amp;version=Banner&amp;module=span-ab-top-region&amp;region=top-news&amp;WT.nav=top-news\" >today began bombing<\/a> targets inside Syria, in concert with its lovely and inspiring group of five allied regimes: Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Jordan.<\/p>\n<p>That means that Syria becomes the 7th predominantly Muslim country bombed by 2009 Nobel Peace Laureate Barack Obama\u2014after <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2014\/09\/10\/world\/asia\/afghanistan-violence\/\" >Afghanistan<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/motherboard.vice.com\/blog\/us-drones-have-killed-up-to-900-civilians-in-pakistan\" >Pakistan<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/middleeast\/yemen\/7806882\/US-cluster-bombs-killed-35-women-and-children.html\" >Yemen<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebureauinvestigates.com\/2012\/02\/22\/militants-and-civilians-killed-in-up-to-20-us-somalia-strikes-new-study-shows\/\" >Somalia<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/pentagon-confirms-predator-drone-strike-libya\/story?id=13442570\" >Libya<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/08\/09\/world\/middleeast\/iraq.html\" >Iraq<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The utter lack of interest in what possible legal authority Obama has to bomb Syria is telling indeed: Empires bomb who they want, when they want, for whatever reason (indeed, recall that Obama bombed Libya even <em>after<\/em> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/floor-action\/house\/168347-house-rejects-libya-authorization-resolution\" >Congress explicitly voted against<\/a> authorization to use force, and very few people seemed to mind that abject act of lawlessness; constitutional constraints are not for warriors and emperors).<\/p>\n<p>It was just over a year ago that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/world\/2013\/09\/01\/secretary-state-john-kerry-says-waiting-congress-makes-syria-response-more-powerful-cites-new-evidence-chemical-attack\/SyP8gYztPZV37EOzfNx9vJ\/singlepage.html\" >Obama officials were insisting<\/a> that bombing and attacking Assad was a moral and strategic imperative. Instead, Obama is now bombing Assad\u2019s enemies while <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/syria-informed-in-advance-of-us-led-airstrikes-against-islamic-state\/2014\/09\/23\/848d79ae-4315-11e4-b437-1a7368204804_story.html?Post+generic=%3Ftid%3Dsm_twitter_washingtonpost\" >politely informing his regime<\/a> of its targets in advance. It seems irrelevant on whom the U.S. wages war; what matters it that it will be at war, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/06\/25\/AR2010062502160.html\" >always and forever<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Six weeks of bombing <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/09\/23\/world\/middleeast\/isis-iraq-airstrikes.html?hp&amp;action=click&amp;pgtype=Homepage&amp;version=HpSumSmallMedia&amp;module=a-lede-package-region&amp;region=top-news&amp;WT.nav=top-news\" >hasn\u2019t budged ISIS in Iraq<\/a>, but it has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/news\/middle-east\/1.616730\" >caused ISIS recruitment to soar<\/a>. That\u2019s all predictable: the U.S. has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2009\/10\/20\/terrorism_6\/\" >known for years<\/a> that what fuels and strengthens anti-American sentiment (and thus anti-American extremism) is exactly what they keep doing: aggression in that region. If you know that, then they know that. At this point, it\u2019s more rational to say they do all of this not <em>despite<\/em>\u00a0triggering those outcomes, but <em>because<\/em> of it. Continuously creating and strengthening enemies is a feature, not a bug. It is what justifies the ongoing greasing of the profitable and power-vesting machine of Endless War.<\/p>\n<p>If there is anyone who actually believes that the point of all of this is a moral crusade to vanquish the evil-doers of ISIS (as the U.S. fights alongside its close Saudi friends), please read <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/english.al-akhbar.com\/content\/syrian-wars-proxy\" >Professor\u00a0As\u2019ad AbuKhalil\u2019s explanation today<\/a> of how Syria is a multi-tiered proxy war. As the disastrous Libya \u201cintervention\u201d should conclusively and permanently demonstrate, the U.S. does not bomb countries for humanitarian objectives.
