{"id":48623,"date":"2014-10-13T12:00:21","date_gmt":"2014-10-13T11:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=48623"},"modified":"2015-05-05T21:29:39","modified_gmt":"2015-05-05T20:29:39","slug":"eu-bans-import-of-israeli-dairy-products-made-in-palestine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2014\/10\/eu-bans-import-of-israeli-dairy-products-made-in-palestine\/","title":{"rendered":"EU Bans Import of Israeli Dairy Products Made in Palestine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The ban is expected to have only minimal economic impact, but it is\u00a0one of the boldest\u00a0moves taken by western nations to put pressure on the Israeli government to change its policies toward\u00a0Palestine.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The European Union has announced that a ban on all Israeli dairy products produced by settlers in the occupied Palestinian territories will be applied as of January of 2015, according to media reports on Friday [10 Oct 2014].<\/p>\n<p>The ban comes after the EU decided that it will no longer recognize Israel&#8217;s claims to areas over the pre-1967 lines.\u00a0This means it will not recognize the authority of the Israeli Agricultural Ministry and their dairy factories that\u00a0operate in these areas \u2013 which include the West Bank, Golan Heights and East Jerusalem. They, therefore, consider the products to be unregulated and not compliant with EU import standards.<\/p>\n<p>In June, the European Union\u00a0placed a similar ban on poultry products, while fish products will be added to the ban as of February of next year.<\/p>\n<p>EU officials have said that this is not an official boycott of Israeli products.\u00a0However, it is\u00a0one of the boldest\u00a0moves taken by any western nation to put pressure on the Israeli government to remove its blockade of the Gaza Strip and stop settlements in Palestinian territory \u2013 which it considers illegal.<\/p>\n<p>The economic impacts of the ban are expected to be minimal, however.
