Only one of those guests, <em>The Nation<\/em>\u2019s editor Katrina vanden Heuvel, would count as \u201canti-war.\u201d The situation barely improves if you add in cable talk shows: Out of a total 205 guests discussing military options in the same period, just six opposed intervention, versus 125 who spoke in favor of it.<\/p>\n<p>The numbers, compiled by progressive media watchdog group <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/fair.org\/press-release\/no-debate-and-the-new-war\/\" >Fairness &amp; Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR)<\/a>, show how out of touch these shows are with the country as a whole, even as they remain Beltway obsessions. They also illustrate in stark terms how little has changed in the decade since <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2011\/12\/leadup-iraq-war-timeline\" >monotonous, stenographic journalism paved the way for the Iraq War<\/a>. Apparently, for these DC programs, being perceived as \u201cserious\u201d still trumps the opportunity to introduce fresh voices and contrarian perspectives.<\/p>\n<p>FAIR\u2019s research, which was the period from September 7 to September 21, included the Sunday shows <em>Meet The Press<\/em>, from NBC; CBS\u2019 <em>Face The Nation<\/em>; ABC\u2019s <em>This Week<\/em>; <em>Fox News Sunday<\/em>; and CNN\u2019s <em>State of the Union<\/em>. Weekday cable shows surveyed include MSNBC\u2019s <em>Hardball<\/em>, CNN\u2019s <em>The Situation Room<\/em>, and MSNBC\u2019s <em>Special Report<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, polls have shown that a majority of Americans are\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/i2.cdn.turner.com\/cnn\/2014\/images\/09\/29\/orc.poll.pdf\" >in favor<\/a> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/today.yougov.com\/news\/2014\/08\/29\/military-action-syria\/\" >of military strikes<\/a> against ISIS in Iraq and Syria, including 73 percent of respondents to a CNN poll conducted around the same time as FAIR\u2019s research. But close to 20 percent oppose any military action, including the strikes authorized by President Barack Obama. And that group is drastically underrepresented on cable and Sunday news talk shows. You would have a better chance at seeing <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2014\/11\/18\/chuck-todd-david-gregory_n_6179548.html\" >David Gregory hosting<\/a> one of those shows again than you would to find multiple anti-war advocates on them.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s not much <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/pressthink.org\/2014\/10\/talk-to-the-critics-the-chuck-todd-plan-to-restore-trust-in-meet-the-press\/\" >evidence<\/a> the shows themselves see much need for reform, which is odd, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/hereandnow.wbur.org\/2014\/04\/24\/talk-shows-decline\" >given<\/a> their diminishing <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/style\/as-meet-the-press-struggles-in-the-ratings-plenty-of-questions-for-host-david-gregory\/2014\/04\/20\/247ed4c0-c72f-11e3-bf7a-be01a9b69cf1_story.html\" >popularity<\/a>.
