{"id":52834,"date":"2015-01-26T12:00:02","date_gmt":"2015-01-26T12:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=52834"},"modified":"2015-05-05T21:26:12","modified_gmt":"2015-05-05T20:26:12","slug":"israeli-think-tank-holds-anti-bds-hackathon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2015\/01\/israeli-think-tank-holds-anti-bds-hackathon\/","title":{"rendered":"Israeli Think-Tank Holds Anti-BDS &#8216;Hackathon&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div id=\"attachment_52835\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/20150116_HackathonAdvert-israel-bds-palestine.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52835\" class=\"wp-image-52835\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/20150116_HackathonAdvert-israel-bds-palestine-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Hackathon Advert [click to enlarge]\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/20150116_HackathonAdvert-israel-bds-palestine-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/20150116_HackathonAdvert-israel-bds-palestine-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/20150116_HackathonAdvert-israel-bds-palestine.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-52835\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hackathon Advert<\/p><\/div><em>16 Jan 2015 &#8211; <\/em>Pro-Israel activists have vowed to fight back against a growing global boycott campaign, using new technological &#8220;tools&#8221; proposed and developed at a recent &#8220;Legitimacy Hackathon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The gathering, held on January 4-6 in Tel Aviv, was organised by Israeli think tank the Reut Institute, who in 2010 produced an influential <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/reut-institute.org\/data\/uploads\/PDFVer\/20100310%20Delegitimacy%20Eng.pdf\" >report<\/a> on fighting what they termed &#8220;delegitimisation&#8221; \u2013 the growing support for Palestinian rights and opposition to Israeli Apartheid.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8216;Hackathon&#8217;, supported by Jewish philanthropy organisation UJA-Federation of New York among others, gathered &#8220;more than 100 developers, cyber experts, Israel activists, marketing and PR professionals&#8221; from the likes of the U.S, Canada, UK, and South America.<\/p>\n<p>Also present were<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.israel21c.org\/headlines\/israel21c-team-wins-3rd-prize-in-reut-institute-legitimacy-hackathon\/\" > representatives <\/a>of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and advocacy organisations such as J Street, Israel Campus Coalition, NGO Monitor, and StandWithUs. In a separate development, it was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/israel-to-bankroll-nis-1m-standwithus-venture\/\" >revealed<\/a> this week that StandWithUs will receive more than NIS 1 million &#8220;to help spread government-backed advocacy messages&#8221;, especially on &#8220;social networks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to Reut, the &#8216;Hackathon&#8217; was intended to &#8220;leverage [Israel advocates&#8217;] technological strengths and compensate for our numerical disadvantage.&#8221; The<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/hackers-develop-tech-tools-to-take-on-bds-crowd\/\" > winning project <\/a>was the &#8220;Virtual War Room&#8221;, developed by students behind the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya-based &#8216;war room&#8217; that defended Israel online during the summer assault on Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>Other <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/firewallegitimacy.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Logic-and-List-of-Projects.pdf\" >project examples<\/a> considered include &#8216;Map the Casbah&#8217;, which &#8220;maps and analyses different terms in the context of Arab public opinion&#8221;, and a &#8220;Discourse Heat Map&#8221;, which uses a &#8220;Richter scale&#8221; to illustrate both &#8220;where delegitimisation is geographically spreading.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Reut Institute&#8217;s motivation for holding the &#8216;Hackathon&#8217; was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ejewishphilanthropy.com\/beyond-hasbarah-harnessing-our-technological-edge-to-strengthen-communities-on-the-front-line\/\" >spelled out<\/a> by the think tank&#8217;s Director of Policy and Strategy Daphna Kaufman in late August 2014, two days after the end of Israel&#8217;s unprecedented assault on the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Internet in general, and social media in particular, have contributed to exponential growth in the delegitimisation campaign&#8221;, Kaufman wrote, acknowledging the weakness of Israel&#8217;s propaganda &#8220;in an ecosystem populated with social networks, virtual communities, and extreme diversity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Improving Zionist groups&#8217; &#8220;toolbox&#8221; in the fight against Palestine solidarity campaigners means &#8220;develop[ing] methodologies to be able to penetrate, with messaging and for other purposes, often protected and niche internet-mediated worlds&#8221; \u2013 as well as identifying &#8220;those individuals that organise drive boycotts, protests, and other forms of delegitimisation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>This is important for gathering intelligence as well as for developing strategies to discredit or otherwise neutralise the activities of these individuals and organisations.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This focus on targeting individual activists is repeated on the &#8216;Hackathon&#8217;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/firewallegitimacy.org\/\" > website<\/a>, where one area of interest is named as &#8220;Outing, naming, and shaming&#8221; the so-called delegitimisers. &#8220;What are their funding sources?&#8221; Reut asks: &#8220;What activities do they engage in or causes that they support may expose their fundamentally illiberal values?&#8221; A YouTube <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Fy72ZIBwRfQ\" >clip<\/a> promoting the gathering refers to Twitter and Facebook as &#8220;open source intelligence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Like Reut&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/electronicintifada.net\/content\/israels-new-strategy-sabotage-and-attack-global-justice-movement\/8683\" >long-standing<\/a> work aimed at undermining a global movement for Palestinian rights, the &#8216;Hackathon&#8217; was a<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jns.org\/jns-blog\/2014\/10\/23\/israeli-institute-seeking-participants-in-upcoming-israel-legitimacy-hackathon#.VLjoYCusUm8=\" > recognition<\/a> that BDS activists and others have already &#8220;made inroads in eroding Israel&#8217;s international image&#8221; and &#8220;in some instances exacted a tangible strategic price&#8221; on Israel.
