{"id":5495,"date":"2010-05-24T00:00:56","date_gmt":"2010-05-23T22:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=5495"},"modified":"2010-05-23T11:56:25","modified_gmt":"2010-05-23T09:56:25","slug":"aid-convoy-sets-off-for-gaza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2010\/05\/aid-convoy-sets-off-for-gaza\/","title":{"rendered":"Aid Convoy sets off for Gaza"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The biggest attempt by international aid groups to break the Israeli siege on the Gaza\u00a0Strip has gotten underway. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Nine ships under the banner, Freedom Flotilla, began their journey to Gaza on Saturday, despite warnings from Israel that\u00a0they will be stopped\u00a0for &#8220;breaching Israeli law&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The vessels are carrying\u00a05,000 tonnes of reconstruction materials, school supplies and medical equipment.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest of the nine ships set off from Istanbul, Turkey,\u00a0heading to the south western city of Antalya where\u00a0two other Turkish ships will be waiting to join the convoy.<\/p>\n<p>The three\u00a0ships will then travel to the waters off Athens and Crete to rendezvous with the other six, before making the four-day journey to Gaza.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Emotional issue&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera&#8217;s\u00a0Anita McNaught, reporting from Istanbul, said Turkey has high hopes for the flotilla as Gaza is an issue close to their hearts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u00a0has been a very emotional evening in Istanbul. The issue of Gaza moves Turks more than any other single issue,&#8221; McNaught said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It has severely coloured the government&#8217;s relationship with Israel and many Turks feel a community spirit and sense of responsibility for the situation in Gaza.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mohammad Sawalha, the vice president of the international committee to break the siege of Gaza, one of the organisers of the mission, told Al Jazeera that a global movement,\u00a0made up\u00a0of\u00a0people\u00a0who want to\u00a0send the message\u00a0that the situation in Gaza\u00a0is unacceptable, was growing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are trying to send a message to everybody that the situation in Gaza will not go on,&#8221;\u00a0Sawalha said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No one can accept what is going on now in Gaza &#8211; preventing people from having the food and medicine they need. This is a crime.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The convoy is from the\u00a0UK, Ireland, Algeria, Kuwait, Greece and Turkey,\u00a0and is comprised of\u00a0800 people from 50 nationalities. It\u00a0is\u00a0made up of three cargo ships and five passengers boats.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Israeli objection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0senior Israeli official has warned the activists that their flotilla of cargo ships and passenger boats\u00a0will be stopped from entering Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>Naor Gilon, a deputy director general at the\u00a0foreign ministry, said the\u00a0action would be\u00a0a &#8220;provocation and breach of Israeli law&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>A statement from Israel&#8217;s foreign ministry said\u00a0it had &#8220;no intention of allowing the flotilla into Gaza&#8221;\u00a0but has not elaborated on what measures could be used to stop them.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives from six organisations, including the European Campaign to End the Siege in Gaza (EGESG), said they were determined to enter the\u00a0area regardless of pressure from Israel.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Israel should not be under any illusion whatsoever that their threats or intimidation will stop us or even that their violence against us will stop us,&#8221; Huwaida Arraf, from the Free Gaza Movement, said.<\/p>\n<p>Kahel Mazen, from EGESG, added: &#8220;If they [the Israelis] choose to resort to destruction and death, our mission is to try to open a window of hope for the people of Gaza.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Israel says the blockade aims to prevent Hamas, the political movement that controls Gaza, from acquiring weapons or materials that could be used for military purposes.<\/p>\n<p>For the majority of Gaza&#8217;s population of 1.5 million people, the result has been impoverished living conditions.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/english.aljazeera.net\/news\/middleeast\/2010\/05\/2010522133016818451.html\" >GO TO ORIGINAL \u2013 ALJAZEERA.NET<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The biggest attempt by international aid groups to break the Israeli siege on the Gaza Strip has gotten underway.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[58],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-5495","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5495","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/4"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=5495"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5495\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=5495"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=5495"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=5495"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
