{"id":56438,"date":"2015-04-13T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-04-13T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=56438"},"modified":"2015-05-05T21:25:53","modified_gmt":"2015-05-05T20:25:53","slug":"nuclear-talks-israel-demands-equality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2015\/04\/nuclear-talks-israel-demands-equality\/","title":{"rendered":"Nuclear Talks: Israel Demands Equality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>30 Mar 2015, Tel Aviv (Rooters agency)<\/em> \u2013 The Israeli government yesterday demanded that it receive \u201cequal treatment\u201d to that in any agreement between Iran and the \u201cP5+1\u201d concerning Iran\u2019s nuclear program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not yet know the details of any likely agreement,\u201d said an Israeli government spokesperson. \u201cBut if Iran is allowed, say, 6000 centrifuges for uranium enrichment, we also deserve the right to have 6000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Iran is allowed to stockpile several hundred kilograms of low-enriched uranium, we surely must be entitled to stockpile an equal quantity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Israel will not accept restrictions on its production of highly enriched uranium that are any more stringent than those agreed to by Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sources in the Israeli government say that the Cabinet was at first divided over how to uphold Israel\u2019s rights if the Iranian negotiations result in an agreement. However, Prime Minister Bud Nottonyernelly eventually won support for his argument that Israel had to insist on strict equality with Iran or risk being marginalized or even excluded from regional diplomacy or wars.<\/p>\n<p>Equal treatment, the sources made clear, will include the right to have \u201cthorough inspections of everything nuclear in Israel\u201d by the International Atomic Energy Agency. PM Nottonyernelly was said to have persuaded the Cabinet that this was the only way to \u201cprevent the Iranians from pretending to be more peaceful than we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Washington, the government appeared to have been taken by surprise by the Israeli declaration.
