{"id":57183,"date":"2015-05-04T12:00:13","date_gmt":"2015-05-04T11:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=57183"},"modified":"2017-05-09T16:09:42","modified_gmt":"2017-05-09T15:09:42","slug":"the-rendition-project-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2015\/05\/the-rendition-project-2\/","title":{"rendered":"The Rendition Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\">April 2015<em> \u2013 A<\/em><em>n unprecedented picture of the 119 individuals secretly detained and tortured by the CIA as part of the US\u2019s war on terror has been published following\u00a0new research by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/tbij.us1.list-manage1.com\/track\/click?u=0592afb78c924d61727f4da3c&amp;id=c16be467fb&amp;e=2a3e5872e8\" >The Rendition Project<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The analysis, which is summarised in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/tbij.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=0592afb78c924d61727f4da3c&amp;id=66748e508d&amp;e=2a3e5872e8\" >our first quarterly report<\/a>, reveals 101 of the detainees were held by the CIA for more than a month, and 47 of these for more than a year. All detainees were held without access to lawyers, their families or the International Committee of the Red Cross.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Bureau and The Rendition Project\u00a0launched a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/tbij.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=0592afb78c924d61727f4da3c&amp;id=86872406a0&amp;e=2a3e5872e8\" >joint investigation<\/a> in January to examine the CIA\u2019s actions and find out what happened to the people they held.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Rendition Project is a collaborative research initiative run by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.therenditionproject.org.uk\/about\/index.html#ruth\" >Dr Ruth Blakeley<\/a> at the University of Kent and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.therenditionproject.org.uk\/about\/index.html#sam\" >Dr Sam Raphael<\/a> at Kingston University. Working closely with a number of other organisations, in particular the legal action charity Reprieve and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, this project aims to bring academic expertise to bear in order to research the CIA&#8217;s rendition, detention and interrogation (RDI) programme.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Rendition Project is at the forefront of efforts to investigate and understand the use of rendition, secret detention and torture by the CIA and its allies in the &#8220;war on terror&#8221;. Through this website users can access:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>The most comprehensive account to date of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.therenditionproject.org.uk\/prisoners\/index.html\" >fate and whereabouts of each of those detained and tortured<\/a> within the programme<\/li>\n<li>The world&#8217;s largest public <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.therenditionproject.org.uk\/flights\/flight-database.html\" >database of rendition flights<\/a> by CIA aircraft<\/li>\n<li>Detailed analysis of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.therenditionproject.org.uk\/flights\/renditions\/index.html\" >more than 60 renditions of individuals<\/a> to secret detention and torture<\/li>\n<li>Material on the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.therenditionproject.org.uk\/flights\/companies\/index.html\" >complex web of companies<\/a> which helped operate a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.therenditionproject.org.uk\/flights\/aircraft\/index.html\" >network of rendition aircraft<\/a> and secret prisons<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The extensive analysis on this site is underpinned by an unrivalled body of primary material, such as prisoner testimonies, declassified documents, flight records, company invoices and court documents. Together, these help to build an unparalleled picture of the CIA&#8217;s torture programme, and are located in the same place for the first time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2013\/may\/22\/us-extraordinary-rendition-programme\" >The Guardian has described The Rendition Project<\/a> as a &#8216;groundbreaking research project which sheds unprecedented light on one of the most controversial secret operations of recent years&#8217;.
