A Canadian advisory panel on Wednesday [6 May 2015] approved a plan to bury nuclear waste at a site just steps away from Lake Huron, saying it had concluded the project would pose no danger to the environment.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Joint Review Panel made its recommendation in\u00a0a report to\u00a0Canada’s environment minister, Leona Aglukkaq, who is expected to\u00a0issue a decision within\u00a0120 days.<\/p>\n

“The Panel concludes that the project is not likely to\u00a0cause significant adverse environmental effects” given the measures contemplated to\u00a0curb them, says the 457-page report.<\/p>\n

Despite 152 communities voicing opposition to\u00a0the project, the panel endorsed the Deep Geologic Repository (DGR), which would see nuclear waste buried some 2,000 feet underground near\u00a0the shore of\u00a0Lake Huron.<\/p>\n

The panel said the project would be the first of\u00a0its kind in\u00a0North America.<\/p>\n

Ontario Power Generation, the group behind\u00a0the DGR, released a statement on\u00a0Wednesday expressing its overall satisfaction with\u00a0the panel’s report.<\/p>\n

“OPG developed the DGR with\u00a0one goal in\u00a0mind: to\u00a0create permanent, safe storage for\u00a0Ontario’s low- and intermediate-level nuclear waste,\u201d said senior vice-president Laurie Swami. \u201cWe are pleased with\u00a0the Panel’s conclusion that the project will safely protect the environment.”<\/p>\n

Among the project’s opponents is Beverly Fernandez, of Stop the Great Lakes Nuclear Dump<\/a>, who said that she was “deeply disappointed” by\u00a0the report’s recommendations.<\/p>\n

“The last place to\u00a0bury and abandon radioactive nuclear waste is beside\u00a0the largest body of\u00a0fresh-water in\u00a0the world,” Fernandez said.<\/p>\n

Publicly owned OPG wants to\u00a0bury 7.1 million cubic feet of\u00a0waste from\u00a0nuclear plants about\u00a02,230 feet below\u00a0the earth’s surface at\u00a0the Bruce Power generating station near\u00a0Kincardine, Ontario.<\/p>\n
