17 May 2015 – <\/em>A UK Navy Seaman has warned that the UK\u2019s nuclear submarine system, Trident, are a “disaster waiting to happen” and is now in hiding.<\/p>\n

Seaman William McNeilly posted a 18 page report on the internet, called The Secret Nuclear Threat, outlining serious security and safety failings.<\/p>\n

McNeilly went on the run following his decision to expose the potentially catastrophic safety and security breaches.<\/p>\n

The Navy has confirmed he had served on board HMS Victorious, which is armed with Trident nuclear missiles.<\/p>\n

The failings outlined in his report include ID cards rarely being checked; the nuclear missile compartment being used as a gym by crew; water dripping onto electrics in the nuclear reactors; and a high risk of nuclear explosion from malpractice.<\/p>\n

William\u00a0McNeilly,\u00a0aged\u00a025, claimed, \u201cit’s harder to get into most nightclubs\u201d than it is to get past\u00a0important\u00a0security checks on\u00a0the submarines.<\/p>\n

McNeilly\u00a0told\u00a0Wikileaks\u00a0\u201cPlease make sure this information is released. I don’t want to be in prison without anyone knowing the truth” adding\u00a0\u201cThis is bigger than me, it\u2019s bigger than all of us. We are so close to a nuclear disaster it is shocking, and yet everybody is accepting the risk to the public.”<\/p>\n

The UK\u2019s Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament responded to the revelation saying it \u201cpaints a nightmarish picture of just how close we may have come to the UK\u2019s own nukes causing the greatest catastrophe this country has ever seen.\u201d<\/p>\n

British Prime Minister David Cameron and military top officials were kept in the dark about the failing security practices, the report claims.<\/p>\n

However the UK Navy sought to dismiss Mcneilly\u2019s claims with a spokesperson labelling it as \u201cunsubstantiated personal views\u201d from \u201ca very junior sailor.”<\/p>\n

In coming months, the new UK government is expected to hold the final vote on whether to spend \u00a3100bn (US$150bn) on its nuclear weapons system which are currently housed in Scotland.<\/p>\n
