It\u00a0is slated to be operational by September.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/yumisophia\/status\/612798320998625281\/photo\/1<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fukushima-forward.jp\/english\/\" >The Fukushima Wind Project<\/a>, located about 12 miles off the coast of Fukushima, installed\u00a0a 2\u00a0MW wind turbine in November 2013. The turbines are part of a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fukushima-forward.jp\/\" >pilot project led by Marubeni Co<\/a>. and funded by the Japanese government with research and support from several public and private organizations, including the University of Tokyo and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.<\/p>\n<p>The new turbine, which will tower 220 meters above the sea, will transmit electricity to the grid via submarine cable, according to <em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2015\/06\/22\/business\/economy-business\/largest-offshore-wind-turbine-unveiled-in-fukushima\/#.VYhImFVVhBf\" >The Japan Times<\/a><\/em>. The government has allocated 50 billion yen ($405 million) for the project, which allows turbines to float in areas that are \u201ctoo deep for traditional towers fixed to the seafloor,\u201d says <em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2015-06-17\/fukushima-wind-project-to-add-largest-turbine-ever-used-at-sea\" >Bloomberg News<\/a>.<\/em>\u00a0There are plans to add a third floating turbine with a generating capacity of 5\u00a0MW later in the year, which will bring\u00a0the total output capacity of the project to 14 MW.<\/p>\n<p>Offshore turbines, which have garnered a lot of\u00a0support in Japan after the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/?s=fukushima\" >Fukushima<\/a> disaster, \u201cenjoy the benefit of more stable wind than onshore models, and are more efficient because they are not hampered by the constraints posed by land and transportation,\u201d says\u00a0<em>The Japan Times.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCountries are exploring floating offshore wind technology and Japan is in a sense at the same level with Norway and Portugal,\u201d which have about 2\u00a0MW of offshore wind generating capacity, Yasuhiro Matsuyama, a trade ministry official in charge of clean energy projects, told <em>Bloomberg News<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In the U.S., Deepwater Wind broke ground (or should I say broke water) this spring on the country\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2015\/04\/28\/offshore-wind-farm-breaks-ground\/\" >first offshore wind farm off the coast of Rhode Island<\/a>.
