Sparks, was first printed by <em>Rand McNally<\/em> in 1931. (The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.davidrumsey.com\/\" >David Rumsey Map Collection<\/a> hosts a fully zoomable version <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.davidrumsey.com\/luna\/servlet\/detail\/RUMSEY%7E8%7E1%7E200375%7E3001080?trs=2&amp;qvq=q%3APub_List_No%3D%221810.000%22%3Blc%3ARUMSEY%7E8%7E1&amp;mi=1\" >here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>This giant, ambitious chart fit neatly with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/0807843547\/?tag=slatmaga-20\" >a trend in nonfiction book publishing of the 1920s and 1930s<\/a>: the \u201coutline,\u201d in which large subjects (the history of the world! every school of philosophy! all of modern physics!) were distilled into a form comprehensible to the most uneducated layman.<\/p>\n<p>The 5-foot-long Histomap was sold for $1 and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/brbl-zoom.library.yale.edu\/viewer\/1086159\" >folded into a green cover<\/a>, which featured endorsements from historians and reviewers. The map, which folds up into a case, is composed of 24 sections.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear what the width of the colored streams is meant to indicate. In other words, if the Y axis of the chart clearly represents time, what does the X axis (marked as &#8220;relative power of contemporary states, nations, and empires&#8221;) represent? What&#8217;s the meaning of &#8220;power&#8221; to the mapmaker? And did Sparks see history as a zero-sum game, in which peoples and nations would vie for shares of finite resources?
