While Animal Protection Agencies and individuals across the World have promoted this truth, a government has now passed a Law proclaiming it. It\u2019s official in New Zealand at least \u2013 Animals are Sentinent Beings!<\/p>\n<p>New Zealand just took a huge a step forward for animal welfare by legally recognizing them as \u201csentient\u201d beings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/sheep_and_lamb-animal-new-zealand-sentient-beings.png\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-61283\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/sheep_and_lamb-animal-new-zealand-sentient-beings.png\" alt=\"sheep_and_lamb animal new zealand sentient beings\" width=\"600\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/sheep_and_lamb-animal-new-zealand-sentient-beings.png 704w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/sheep_and_lamb-animal-new-zealand-sentient-beings-300x189.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>The amendment\u00a0to New Zealand law on behalf of the\u00a0The Animal Welfare Amendment was passed on Tuesday. The new bill states that animals, like humans, are \u201csentient\u201d beings \u2014 meaning they are able to perceive and feel things.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTo say that animals are sentient is to state explicitly that they can experience both positive and negative emotions, including pain and distress,\u201d said Dr Virginia Williams, chair of the National Animal Ethics Advisory Committee. \u201cThe explicitness is what is new and marks another step along the animal welfare journey.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The bill also includes banning cosmetic testing on animals, which was recently put into law last month.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It also provides for a penalty scheme to enable moderate\u00a0offending to be handled more effectively, and gives animal welfare inspectors the power to issue compliance notices, among other capacities.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The new bill is one of many positive strides that New Zealand has made recently when it comes to animal welfare and environmental issues.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cExpectations on animal welfare have been rapidly changing.\u00a0The bill brings legislation in line with our nation\u2019s changing attitude on the status of animals in society,\u201d said New Zealand Veterinary Association president Dr Steve Merchant.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/veganmemo.com\/its-official-new-zealand-recognizes-animals-as-sentient-beings\/\" >Go to Original \u2013 veganmemo.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>19 Jul 2015 &#8211; The bill also includes banning cosmetic testing on animals, which was recently put into law last month.
