21 Jul 2015 – Nuclear weapons should be completely eliminated worldwide as they are “detrimental to international peace and security,” the Iranian government said in a statement following a passage of the Security Council resolution endorsing the Iran nuclear deal.<\/em><\/p>\n

On Monday [20 Jul 2015], the UN Security Council voted unanimously to\u00a0adopt UN Resolution 2231 in\u00a0support of\u00a0a nuclear deal reached last week by\u00a0Iran and the P5+1 group, comprising China, France, Russia, the United States, Britain and Germany.<\/p>\n

“The Islamic Republic of\u00a0Iran underlines the imperative of\u00a0total elimination of\u00a0nuclear weapons, as\u00a0a requirement of\u00a0international security and an obligation under\u00a0the Treaty on\u00a0the Non-Proliferation of\u00a0Nuclear Weapons (NPT),” <\/em>the statement, issued on\u00a0Monday, reads as\u00a0quoted by\u00a0Iran’s ISNA news agency.<\/em><\/p>\n

The statement added that Tehran is committed to\u00a0actively contribute to “all international diplomatic and legal efforts to\u00a0save humanity from\u00a0the menace of\u00a0nuclear weapons and their proliferation.”<\/p>\n

The Iranian government stressed the importance of\u00a0the establishment of\u00a0the Middle East nuclear weapon free zone.<\/p>\n

The P5+1 international negotiators have been attempting to\u00a0reach a comprehensive agreement with\u00a0Iran that would insure the peaceful nature of\u00a0the country’s nuclear program since\u00a0November 2013, when an interim was signed.<\/p>\n

On July 14, a final deal was struck in\u00a0the Austrian capital of\u00a0Vienna after\u00a0over two weeks of\u00a0continuous talks and multiple extensions of\u00a0self-imposed deadlines.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0the final text of\u00a0the nuclear agreement, Iran will under\u00a0no circumstances seek to\u00a0develop or acquire a nuclear weapon and, in\u00a0exchange, will receive sanctions relief. The text details how the final treaty will positively contribute to\u00a0regional Middle Eastern security.<\/p>\n
