He said he joined the Army
\nto give meaning to his life,
\nsomething his career
\nas a short-order cook in Alabama
\nlacked.<\/p>\n
The meaning he got was the challenge
\nof recovering from an IED
\nand battlefront surgery.<\/p>\n
His surgeons learned a lot too,
\nstanding in an inch of blood
\nas they saved his nose, many of his teeth,
\nand much of his right leg.<\/p>\n
So now Walter is a man,
\nphysical therapy is his job,
\nand his search for meaning limps along
\nlike the war itself.
