The country\u2019s Rural Affairs Secretary, Richard Lochhead, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/news.scotland.gov.uk\/News\/Agri-vision-1ba6.aspx\" >announced last week <\/a>that the clean,<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trueactivist.com\/biggest-yet-greenwald-to-publish-names-of-americans-whom-nsa-is-spying-on\/\" > green nation <\/a>will no longer be permitting <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trueactivist.com\/what-are-roundup-ready-bt-pesticide-gmo-crops-you-need-to-know\/\" >GM crops<\/a> to be grown within its borders.<\/p>\n<p>As <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/sustainablepulse.com\/2015\/08\/09\/scotland-announces-total-ban-on-gm-crops\/#.VcfG0M7gLzL\" ><em>Sustainable Pulse <\/em>reports<\/a>, the Scottish Government intends to take advantage of new EU rules allowing countries to opt out of growing EU-authorized GM crops; Scotland made its exclusion final last week.<\/p>\n<p>The amendment to Directive 2001\/18\/EC came into force earlier this year and allows Member States and Devolved Administrations to <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trueactivist.com\/12-year-old-blasts-n-c-governor-on-voting-right-restrictions\/\" >restrict<\/a> or ban the cultivation of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trueactivist.com\/new-study-gmo-corn-makes-rats-infertile\/\" >genetically modified organisms<\/a><\/strong> (GMOs) within their territory.<\/p>\n<p>The Scottish Government will now proceed to submit a request that Scotland be excluded from any <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trueactivist.com\/activists-attempt-to-shut-down-european-central-bank\/\" >European<\/a> consents for the cultivation of GM crops, including the variety of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trueactivist.com\/7-reasons-why-genetically-modified-foods-will-never-be-labeled\/\" >genetically modified<\/a> maize already approved and six other GM crops presently awaiting authorization.<\/p>\n<p>Lochhead stated:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cScotland is known around the world for our beautiful natural environment \u2013 and banning growing <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trueactivist.com\/thousands-of-genetically-modified-insects-set-for-release\/\" >genetically modified crops<\/a> will protect and further enhance our clean, green status.\u201d <\/em>He continued, <em>\u201cThere is no evidence of significant demand for GM products by Scottish consumers and I am concerned that allowing <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trueactivist.com\/genetically-modified-organism-gmo-myths-and-truths\/\" >GM crops<\/a> to be grown in Scotland would damage our clean and green brand, thereby gambling with the future of our \u00a314 billion food and drink sector.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Cabinet Secretary shared that Scottish food and drink is naturally valued at home and abroad to be <em>very <\/em>high-quality, therefore allowing GMOs to be grown would <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trueactivist.com\/new-study-gmo-corn-makes-rats-infertile\/\" >dilute its quality<\/a> and, in effect, adversely affect the country\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trueactivist.com\/gab_gallery\/when-will-the-economy-collapse\/\" >economy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThat is why I strongly support the continued application of the precautionary principle in relation to GM crops and intend to take full <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trueactivist.com\/us-environmental-protection-agency-accidentally-spills-toxic-waste-into-river\/\" >advantage<\/a> of the flexibility allowed under these new <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trueactivist.com\/court-rules-against-fda-in-landmark-health-freedom-case\/\" >EU rules<\/a> to ban GM crops from being grown in Scotland,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n<p>Lochhead believes that GM policy in Scotland should be guided by what\u2019s <strong>best <\/strong>for the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trueactivist.com\/gab_gallery\/re-thinking-progress-the-circular-economy\/\" >economy<\/a> and the agricultural sector, rather than the priorities of others.<\/p>\n<p>The Rural Affairs Secretary also kicked off a national discussion on the <em>Future of Scottish Agriculture<\/em> at the Turriff Show on Monday:\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/news.scotland.gov.uk\/News\/Agri-vision-1ba6.aspx\" >news.scotland.gov.uk\/News\/Agri-vision-1ba6.aspx<\/a> He has stated openly that he welcomes feedback.<\/p>\n<p>The newly amended <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trueactivist.com\/10-very-strange-things-that-have-happened-in-just-the-past-few-weeks\/\" >directive <\/a>applies to new cultivation dossiers and not GMOs that have already been or are currently being considered for approval.<\/p>\n<p>As <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/news.scotland.gov.uk\/News\/Agri-vision-1ba6.aspx\" >shared in the press release<\/a>, the newly amended directive applies to new cultivation dossiers and not GMOs that have already been or are currently being considered for approval. Transitional arrangements have also been put in place to enable Member States and Devolved Administrations to request that their territory is excluded from any consents in relation to applications that were received prior to April 2, 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Member States\/Regions wishing to use the transitional arrangements to opt out of growing <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trueactivist.com\/100000-german-beekeepers-just-called-for-a-ban-on-gmos\/\" >EU-approved <\/a>GM maize MON 810 or any of the GM maize varieties currently awaiting EU approval must notify the European Commission by October 2, 2015.<\/p>\n<p>_______________________________<\/p>\n<p><em>This article is free and open source.
