21 Aug 20125 – <\/em>Debt laden Greece has been forced to\u00a0sell the family silver in\u00a0an all too familiar tale with\u00a0ancient history repeating itself.<\/p>\n

The Hellenic Public Asset Development Fund has been published by\u00a0German Green MEP Sven Giegold who said the Greek people “hardly know” what will be sold off\u00a0and that they have “the right” to\u00a0know.<\/p>\n

The selling of\u00a0Greek assets to\u00a0raise $56 billion (\u20ac50bn) was demanded by\u00a0Greece’s creditors, the Troika. The document reveals that 66 percent of\u00a0a gas distribution and processing firm will be sold to\u00a0Azerbaijan; 35 percent of\u00a0Greece’s first oil refinery firm will be sold off\u00a0along with\u00a017 percent of\u00a0its electricity\u00a0distributor\u00a0and 65 percent of\u00a0gas distributor Depa.<\/p>\n

All rail and bus services will go under\u00a0the hammer\u00a0\u2014 along\u00a0with the Greek telephone and postal service.<\/p>\n

Even before\u00a0the bailout deal was completed and the money arrived safely in\u00a0the Greek banks, the Germans had won their bid to\u00a0take over\u00a014 Greek airports for\u00a0the next 40 years, paying\u00a0$1.36 billion (\u20ac1.23bn)\u00a0for the privilege.<\/p>\n

Of the $56 billion (\u20ac50bn) needed in\u00a0asset stripping and bank shares, only $8.69 billion (\u20ac7.7bn) has been agreed so far.<\/p>\n

Nick Dearden, economic expert and campaigner, says it makes “no sense to\u00a0sell off\u00a0valuable assets in\u00a0the middle of\u00a0Europe’s worst depression in\u00a070 years.”<\/p>\n
