(Photo: IRIN \/ Flickr)<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>2 Sep 2015 &#8211; <\/em>As Yemen rapidly disintegrates, the U.S. is turning a blind eye to atrocities committed by its Saudi allies \u2014 even as Washington enables them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The crisis in Yemen has become catastrophic. Since the beginning of the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-middle-east-34011187\" >Saudi-led coalition\u2019s airstrikes<\/a> on March 26, violence in Yemen has escalated significantly, leaving the nation decimated with little to no hope for an end in sight.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Saudi-led coalition, backed by the United States, has been bombing Yemen for five months in order to quell the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/magazine-31907671\" >Houthis<\/a>, a Shia rebel group that staged a coup to exile President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi and take over the capital city of Sanaa. Violence between forces loyal to the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/magazine-31907671\" >exiled President Hadi<\/a>, including indiscriminate airstrikes staged by the Saudi-led coalition, and Houthi rebel allies has left nearly\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-middle-east-34011187\" >4,500<\/a>\u00a0people dead and 23,000 injured in the past five months.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Hadi supporters and Houthi forces\u00a0are not the only groups perpetrating violence in Yemen. The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world\/middleeast\/la-fg-us-yemen-20150817-story.html\" >U.S. government<\/a> continues to provide intelligence, weapons, and midair refueling to coalition aircrafts. Furthermore, U.S. warships have participated in the blockade in the Gulf of Aden and the southern Arabian Sea in order to impede the Houthi forces from receiving weapons shipments from Iran. Both Iranians and Houthis deny that such an exchange is occurring.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">When asked about U.S. involvement in the massacre of Yemeni civilians, Commander<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world\/middleeast\/la-fg-us-yemen-20150817-story.html\" >\u00a0Kevin Stephens<\/a>, a U.S. military spokesman in Bahrain, stated, \u201cThe final decisions on the conduct of operations in the campaign are made by the members of the Saudi-led coalition, not the United States.\u201d This is a clear attempt to take away any responsibility and accountability the U.S. has for the thousands of Yemenis who have been killed since coalition airstrikes began five months ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/ap-interview-red-cross-chief-decries-yemen-violence-111335603.html\" >Peter Maurer<\/a>, head of Red Cross International, told the AP that \u201cYemen after five months looks like Syria after five years\u201d after returning from war-torn Yemen in August 2015. The increase in violence since March 2015 has exacerbated the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/reliefweb.int\/sites\/reliefweb.int\/files\/resources\/four_months_report_18082015.pdf\" >existing issues<\/a> that have plagued\u00a0Yemen for years: poor governance, lack of rule of law, widespread poverty, and insufficient access to basic healthcare and water, among others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-middle-east-34011187\" >Saudi airstrikes<\/a> against rebels have effectively destroyed Yemen\u2019s infrastructure and have resulted in rigid restrictions on imports.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/yemen-saudi-arabia-usa-mena.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-63663\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/yemen-saudi-arabia-usa-mena.jpg\" alt=\"yemen saudi arabia usa mena\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/yemen-saudi-arabia-usa-mena.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/yemen-saudi-arabia-usa-mena-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">According to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oxfam.org.uk\/what-we-do\/emergency-response\/yemen-crisis\" >Oxfam<\/a>, Yemen relies on imports to meet more than 80 percent of its national food consumption. Even before the escalation occurred, approximately half of the population \u2014 10 million Yemenis \u2014 was already going hungry. The situation has grown more grave, as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oxfam.org.uk\/what-we-do\/emergency-response\/yemen-crisis\" >20 million<\/a> people are now in need of water and sanitation assistance, and 15 million lack access to basic health care. The Saudi-led coalition\u2019s carnage of Yemen has impeded humanitarian access that would help ameliorate the crisis. The\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/reliefweb.int\/sites\/reliefweb.int\/files\/resources\/four_months_report_18082015.pdf\" >strict restrictions<\/a> on food and fuel imports \u2014 compounded by the lack of funding humanitarian organizations have for sending relief to Yemen \u2014 leaves Yemen virtually helpless.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Meanwhile, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/mde31\/2291\/2015\/en\/\" >Amnesty<\/a> continues to report on Saudi-led coalition\u2019s unlawful airstrikes, which often target heavily populated civilian areas with no military targets nearby. Amnesty has documented\u00a0multiple\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/mde31\/2291\/2015\/en\/\" >case studies<\/a> of hundreds of innocent civilians being killed by coalition airstrikes, often times the majority of the victims being women and children.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It seems, however, that it is not just the Saudi-led coalition displaying a blatant disregard for civilian lives. On the ground, both\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/documents\/mde31\/2291\/2015\/en\/\" >Houthi and anti-Houthi armed groups<\/a> have killed and harmed civilians in their quest for the cities of Aden and Ta\u2019iz \u2014 the majority of the attacks being aimed at residential neighborhoods. Whether in airstrikes or on-ground fighting, the result appears to be the same: the loss of civilian lives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The most recent Saudi-led airstrike occurred on Sunday, August 30, at a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2015\/08\/30\/middleeast\/yemen-bottle-factory\/\" >water bottling factory<\/a>, leaving 36 dead and dozens injured. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2015\/08\/30\/middleeast\/yemen-bottle-factory\/\" >Saudi Brigadier General Ahmed Asseri<\/a>, a spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition, claims that the factory was being used by Houthi forces to make explosives and train African migrants forced to take up arms.
