{"id":6373,"date":"2010-07-19T12:00:33","date_gmt":"2010-07-19T10:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=6373"},"modified":"2018-10-13T11:31:24","modified_gmt":"2018-10-13T10:31:24","slug":"i-support-mairead-maguire%e2%80%99s-appeal-to-free-mordechai-vanunu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2010\/07\/i-support-mairead-maguire%e2%80%99s-appeal-to-free-mordechai-vanunu\/","title":{"rendered":"I Support Mairead Maguire\u2019s Appeal to Free Mordechai Vanunu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I endorse every word by TRANSCEND member Mairead Maguire.<\/p>\n<p>Mordechai and I got the Right Livelihood Award, aka the alternative Nobel Peace Prize, the same year, 1987. \u00a0 He embodies the best of Western Civilization: courage, honesty, truth, dedication to peaceful resolution.\u00a0 By disowning him from the narrow angle of state security interests Israel acts against its own interest: to stand as a beacon for such values, so often trampled upon by non-Jews when carried by Jews.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody asks the Israeli government to agree with Mordechai, even if very many nourish the hope that one day they will. \u00a0 All that is demanded is to treat him decently, proving in\u00a0 practice that Israel is a human rights respecting democracy; the exact opposite of a nazi Germany in its treatment of Ossietzky.\u00a0 The level of democracy is not measured by the tolerance of minor disgreements but by how the country treats people like whistleblowers.\u00a0 Mordechai is one of those.\u00a0 The world needs them more than ever.\u00a0 So does Israel.\u00a0 Wake up, Israel, be truthful to your own deeper values!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mordechai and I got the Right Livelihood Award, aka the alternative Nobel Peace Prize, the same year, 1987.
