{"id":64769,"date":"2015-10-05T12:00:49","date_gmt":"2015-10-05T11:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=64769"},"modified":"2019-11-18T10:05:56","modified_gmt":"2019-11-18T10:05:56","slug":"one-day-after-warning-russia-of-civilian-casualties-the-u-s-bombs-a-hospital-in-afghanistan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2015\/10\/one-day-after-warning-russia-of-civilian-casualties-the-u-s-bombs-a-hospital-in-afghanistan\/","title":{"rendered":"One Day after Warning Russia of Civilian Casualties, the U.S. Bombs a Hospital in Afghanistan"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_61466\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/glenn-greenwald-031315.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61466\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-61466\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/glenn-greenwald-031315-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Glenn Greenwald\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-61466\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Glenn Greenwald<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>3 Oct 2015 &#8211; <\/em>Yesterday afternoon, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power marched to Twitter to\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AmbassadorPower\/status\/650045789985746944\" >proclaim<\/a>: \u201cWe call on Russia\u00a0to immediately cease attacks on Syrian opposition and\u00a0civilians.\u201d Along with that decree, she posted a statement from the U.S. and several of its closest authoritarian allies \u2014 including\u00a0Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the U.K. \u2014 warning Russia that civilian casualties \u201cwill only fuel more extremism and radicalization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Early this morning, in the Afghan city of Kunduz, the U.S. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/10\/04\/world\/asia\/afghanistan-bombing-hospital-kunduz.html?hp&amp;action=click&amp;pgtype=Homepage&amp;module=first-column-region&amp;region=top-news&amp;WT.nav=top-news\" >dropped bombs<\/a>\u00a0on a hospital run by Doctors Without Borders (M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res (MSF)). The airstrike killed at least nine of the hospital\u2019s medical staff, and seriously injured dozens of patients. \u201cAmong the dead was the Afghan head of the hospital, Abdul Sattar,\u201d reported the<em>\u00a0New York Times.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jason Cone, MSF\u2019s executive director, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jtcone1977\/status\/650234649562607616\" >said<\/a> the medical charity \u201ccondemns in the strongest possible terms the horrific bombing of its hospital in Kunduz full of staff and patients.\u201d He <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jtcone1977\/status\/650235073065717760\" >added<\/a> that \u201call parties [to the]\u00a0conflict, including in Kabul &amp; Washington, were clearly informed of precise GPS Coordinates of MSF\u00a0facilities in Kunduz,\u201d and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jtcone1977\/status\/650235745303564288\" >that<\/a> the \u201cprecise location of MSF\u00a0Kunduz hospital [was] communicated to all parties on multiple occasions over past months, including on 9\/29.\u201d Worst of all, from MSF itself:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Bombing continued for &gt;30 minutes after American &amp; Afghan military officials in Kabul &amp; Washington first informed of proximity to hospital.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; MSF International (@MSF) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MSF\/status\/650237134457163776?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >October 3, 2015<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>For its part, the U.S. military in Afghanistan <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/stuartmillar159\/status\/650271482057113601\" >issued a statement <\/a>acknowledging that it carried out\u00a0airstrikes, claimed they were conducted\u00a0\u201cagainst individuals threatening the force,\u201d and conceded that \u201cthe strike may have resulted in collateral damage to a nearby medical facility.\u201d But the<em> NYT<\/em> reported: \u201cFrom early on, the Taliban had respected the hospital\u2019s request not to bring weapons inside, according to staff members, and the hospital had been a refuge in the shattered city of Kunduz. After days of silence from the U.S. government\u00a0\u2014 which has actively participated from the start in the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2015\/07\/10\/yemen-airstrike\/\" >heinous bombing of Yemen<\/a> \u2014 Ambassador Power <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AmbassadorPower\/status\/650105650463305732\" >finally acknowledged<\/a> the wedding massacre, but treated it like some natural disaster that has nothing to do with the U.S.: \u201cTerrible news from Yemen of killing of innocent civilians &amp; aid workers. Urgently need pol solution to crisis,\u201d she tweeted.<\/p>\n<p>Her accompanying statement claimed that \u201cthe United States has no role in the targeting decisions made by the Coalition in Yemen,\u201d but yesterday, the Saudi Foreign Minister <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/saudi-foreign-minister-adel-al-jubeir-airstrikes-in-yemen-civilian-casualties\/\" >told\u00a0<em>CBS News<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>that \u201cWe work with our allies including the United States on these targets.\u201d There\u2019s no dispute that the U.S. has lavished Saudi Arabia with all sorts of weapons and intelligence as it carries out its <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2015\/09\/01\/yemen-hidden-war-saudi-coalition-killing-civilians\/\" >civilian-massacring attacks on Yemen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This last week has been a particularly gruesome\u00a0illustration of continuous U.S. conduct\u00a0under the War on Terror banner, including under the Nobel Peace Prize-winning president who celebrates himself for \u201cending two wars\u201d (in the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2015\/09\/30\/u-s-bombs-somehow-keep-falling-in-the-places-where-obama-boasts-he-ended-wars\/\" >same two countries where the U.S. continues to drop bombs<\/a>). The formula by now is clear: bombing whatever countries it wants, justifying it all by reflexively labeling their targets\u00a0as \u201cterrorists,\u201d and then dishonestly denying or casually dismissing the civilians they slaughter as \u201ccollateral damage.\u201d If one were to construct a list of all the countries in the world based on their credibility to condemn Russia for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2015\/10\/01\/middleeast\/russia-syria\/\" >using this exact rhetorical template in Syria<\/a>, the U.S. would literally be last on that list.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>UPDATE<\/u><\/strong>: U.S. officials went to <em>Time<\/em>\u00a0magazine yesterday <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/4059442\/russia-bombing-syria-isis-assad\/\" >to announce<\/a>\u00a0that Russia will be creating more terrorists than they kill as a result of misguided airstrikes in Syria. \u201cWe believe if you inadvertently kill innocent men, women and children, then there\u2019s a backlash from that,\u201d said Lt. Gen. Bob Otto, the Air Force\u2019s deputy chief of staff for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. \u201cWe might kill three and create 10 terrorists. It really goes back to the question of are we killing more than were making?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s impossible to fathom what the U.S. media would be saying and doing if Russia did something like this in Syria. By contrast, the reaction to this airstrike by their own government will be muted and filled with <em>apologia<\/em>, ironically quite similar to\u00a0the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/10\/03\/us\/obama-rebukes-bush-on-stuff-happens-reaction-to-oregon-shootings.html\" >widely vilified caricature<\/a> of Jeb Bush\u2019s comments about the Oregon shooting spree: \u201cstuff happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>UPDATE II<\/u><\/strong>: Al Jazeera <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2015\/10\/aid-workers-killed-air-strike-afghan-hospital-kunduz-151003043052500.html\" >reports<\/a> that the hospital bombed by the U.S. \u201cis the only medical facility in the region that can deal with major injuries.\u201d Nonetheless, \u201cofficials of MSF \u2026 told Reuters that they \u2018frantically phoned\u2019 NATO and Washington DC, as bombs rained on the hospital for \u2018nearly an hour.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>UPDATE III<\/u><\/strong>: The latest casualty figures from MSF:<\/p>\n<p><em>LATEST: 16 ppl killed \u2013 9 MSF staff, 7 patients (3 children). 37 injured \u2013 19 staff (5 critical) &amp; 18 patients &amp; caretakers. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Afghanistan?src=hash\" >#Afghanistan<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2014 MSF UK (@MSF_uk) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MSF_uk\/status\/650316884454326272\" >October 3, 2015<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the nation just three days ago about the Oregon shooting spree, Barack Obama <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-politics\/wp\/2015\/10\/01\/obama-on-mass-shooting-this-is-a-political-choice-that-we-make-to-allow-this-to-happen-every-few-months-in-america\/\" >said<\/a>: \u201cThis is a political choice that we make, to allow this to happen every few months.\u201d That applies to a lot more than that incident.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>UPDATE IV<\/u><\/strong>: Several reports suggest that this hospital has been viewed with hostility because it treats all injured human beings, regardless of which side they\u2019re on. \u201cThe hospital treated the wounded from all sides of the conflict, a policy that has long irked the Afghan security forces,\u201d reports the\u00a0<em>NYT. <\/em>Al Jazeera <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2015\/10\/aid-workers-killed-air-strike-afghan-hospital-kunduz-151003043052500.html\" >notes<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0\u201ca\u00a0caretaker at the hospital, who was severely injured in the air strike, told Al Jazeera that [the] clinic\u2019s medical staff did not favor any side of the conflict. \u2018We are here to help and treat civilians,\u2019 Abdul Manar said.\u201d That same caretaker added: \u201cSeveral women and children are also killed in the strike. I could hear them screaming for help inside the hospital while it was set ablaze by the bombing. We are terrified and speechless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>UPDATE V<\/u><\/strong>: The U.N. human rights chief has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/bigstory.ap.org\/article\/fa50c8716cb146e99b5aae867439780d\/latest-confusion-over-bombing-afghanistan-hospital\" >denounced the U.S. airstrike<\/a> as \u201ctragic, inexcusable, and possibly even criminal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time this has happened.
