A total of 19 EU countries have \u201copted out\u201d of growing <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/news\/food-agriculture\/gmo-genetically-modified-organism\/\" >genetically modified<\/a> (GMOs) crops within all or part of their territories.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/GreenpeaceEU\/status\/649965189731905536\/photo\/1?ref_src=twsrc^tfw<\/p>\n<p>These governments have taken the \u201copt-out\u201d clause of a European Commission rule passed in March that allows its 28-member bloc to abstain from growing GMO crops, even if they are already authorized to be grown within the union.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2015\/10\/04\/eu-gmo-opt-out-idUSL6N0M01F620151004\" ><em>Reuters<\/em><\/a>, the member states specifically targeted the cultivation of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/?s=monsanto\" >Monsanto<\/a>\u2019s MON 810 maize, the only GMO crop grown in Europe (just in Spain and Portugal), and is currently under review at the European level.<\/p>\n<p>A European Commission spokesman Enrico Brivio confirmed to <em>Reuters<\/em> that the 19 countries opting out are: Austria, Belgium for the Wallonia region, Britain for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland and Slovenia.<\/p>\n<p>As <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/317638-eu-gmo-cultivation-opt-out\/\" ><em>RT noted<\/em><\/a>, Belgium and the UK are applying the opt-out rule for only part of their their territories, while Germany requested a partial opt-out in order to pursue more GMO research.<\/p>\n<p>Companies have been notified of the members\u2019 requests and have one month to react to the decisions.<\/p>\n<p>Although GMOs are widely grown in many parts of the world, the topic is fraught with contention in Europe.
