In a separate appeals court decision, a federal judge upheld a\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2013\/10\/16\/mexico-bans-gmo-corn-effective-immediately\/\" >2013 ruling<\/a>\u00a0that barred companies such as\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/?s=monsanto\" >Monsanto<\/a> and DuPont\/Pioneer from planting or selling their GMO corn within the country\u2019s borders.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_66456\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/mexicomonsanto.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66456\" class=\"wp-image-66456\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/mexicomonsanto.jpg\" alt=\"Two separate court decisions in Mexico have blocked cultivation of Monsanto\u2019s genetically modified corn in the country and soy in two states. Photo credit: GMO Free USA<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The court decisions were heralded as a\u00a0\u201cdouble whammy\u201d against agribusiness giant\u00a0Monsanto, according to a celebratory\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=1093941207313008\" >Facebook post<\/a> from sustainable food advocacy organization GMO Free USA.<\/p>\n<p>According to a report from\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/mexiconewsdaily.com\/news\/gmo-opponents-win-another-round\/\" >Mexico News Daily<\/a>, the ruling on Wednesday [4 Nov] favored an injunction filed by Maya beekeepers on the Yucat\u00e1n peninsula, where honey production and collection is its main industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe decision suspends a permit granted to the agrichemical firm Monsanto to farm genetically modified soybeans on over 250,000 hectares in the region and instructs a federal agency it must first consult with indigenous communities before granting any future permits for transgenic soy farming,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p>Environmental organizations such as Greenpeace, Indignaci\u00f3n and Litiga OLE reportedly said that farming GMO soybeans in the region would\u00a0put <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/?s=honey\" >honey<\/a> production and approximately 15,000 Maya farm families at risk due to the use of the herbicide <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/?s=glyphosate\" >glyphosate<\/a> (which has been <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2015\/09\/16\/glyphosate-linked-to-cancer\/\" >linked to cancer<\/a>). It was also claimed that soy production would lead to deforestation in Campeche.<\/p>\n<p>Monsanto has since given a response to the decision, denying that its GMO soy has impacted <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/?s=honeybees\" >bees<\/a>, causes deforestation or damages the honey industry in the two states, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2015\/11\/07\/us-mexico-gmo-idUSKCN0SV2W720151107?feedType=RSS&amp;feedName=scienceNews#ox4q1yOLuQphmUxz.97\" >Reuters<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not accept accusations that put us as responsible for deforestation and illegal logging in the municipality of Hopelch\u00e9n, Campeche, or any place of the Republic, because our work is rigidly attached to the guidelines provided by law,\u201d the company said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>As for GMO corn, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/sustainablepulse.com\/2015\/11\/04\/mexican-federal-judge-upholds-gm-maize-ban-during-appeal-process\/#.VkCoPGSrTZs\" >Sustainable Pulse<\/a> reported that federal judge Benjamin Soto S\u00e1nchez, head of the second Unitarian Court in Civil and Administrative Matters of the First Circuit, \u201cupheld a provisional suspension prohibiting pertinent federal agencies from processing and granting the privilege of sowing or releasing into the environment of transgenic maize in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This decision came\u00a0despite 100 challenges by transnational agribusiness interests and the federal government, according to Sustainable Pulse.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BREAKING NEWS: Mexico Gives Monsanto a Double Whammy. Monsanto and the GMO\/agrichemical industry didn&#39;t have a&#8230; <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/C1nFagO6yw\" >https:\/\/t.co\/C1nFagO6yw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; GMO Free USA (@GMOFreeUSA) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GMOFreeUSA\/status\/663687235598860288?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >November 9, 2015<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>According to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/opinion\/2014\/05\/mexico-monsanto-maize-gmo-2014526114154374563.html\" >Al Jazeera<\/a>, \u201cFewer than 30 percent of Mexican farmers even use conventional hybrid maize\u2014high-yielding, single-use seeds, which need to be purchased every year,\u201d and prefer\u00a0\u201cto stick with seeds they can save year to year, often varieties of the native \u2018landraces\u2019 of maize the injunction is intended to protect.\u201d\u00a0Still, Monsanto \u201chas the Mexican market for yellow maize seeds; 90 percent of U.S. maize is in GM seeds, and that is the source for Mexico\u2019s imports of yellow maize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mexico\u2019s initial ban of GMO corn in September 2013 was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/sustainablepulse.com\/2015\/08\/20\/judge-overturns-mexico-gmo-maize-ban-in-tragic-ruling\/\" >overturned in August 2015<\/a>, which opened the door for more business opportunities for Monsanto pending favorable\u00a0later\u00a0court decisions, as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.telesurtv.net\/english\/news\/GMO-Ban-Pending-Monsanto-Hopes-to-Double-Sales-in-Mexico--20151028-0016.html\" >Telesurtv<\/a> noted.
