Credit Vincent Kessler\/Reuters<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>23 Nov 2015 &#8211; <\/em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/topic\/person\/joyce-carol-oates\" >Joyce Carol Oates<\/a>, the author of more than 50 books, faced a spirited backlash on Twitter after she posed a question Sunday about whether anything is \u201ccelebratory &amp; joyous\u201d within the Islamic State.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">All we hear of ISIS is puritanical &amp; punitive; is there nothing celebratory &amp; joyous? Pretty sure there is no upside.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Kathleen (@katnandu) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/katnandu\/status\/668571927594860546?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >November 22, 2015<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>In an email, Ms. Oates said she posted to Twitter several times on the subject after reading coverage in The New York Times about the treatment of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/11\/22\/world\/middleeast\/isis-wives-and-enforcers-in-syria-recount-collaboration-anguish-and-escape.html\" >women in the Islamic State<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on that piece, I wondered how is it possible that human beings would choose to live such grim, narrow lives, driven by the harshest sort of fanaticism and continually under the scrutiny of religious police, without any sort of happiness or fellow feeling?\u201d she wrote. \u201cIt is a choice that bewilders many of us, I would think \u2014 not just me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Randy Souther, who has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/celestialtimepiece.com\/\" >written about Ms. Oates<\/a> for 20 years and started a scholarly journal focused on her work, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/repository.usfca.edu\/jcostudies\/about.html\" >Bearing Witness: Joyce Carol Oates Studies<\/a>, said he believed the focus on one of her four tweets missed important context.
