{"id":67067,"date":"2015-11-30T12:00:56","date_gmt":"2015-11-30T12:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=67067"},"modified":"2015-11-30T02:25:58","modified_gmt":"2015-11-30T02:25:58","slug":"chem-trails-etc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2015\/11\/chem-trails-etc\/","title":{"rendered":"Chem Trails, Etc."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>They tell me the feathery plumes I see<br \/>\nwhen little jets traverse my sky<br \/>\nare nothing at all to worry me&#8211;<br \/>\na trick of Nature\u2026 something about vectors<br \/>\nor vortexes or some such thing\u2014<br \/>\nan optical-illusion-thing<br \/>\nthat I\u2019m now too old to understand.<\/p>\n<p>But, I remember when I was thirteen\u2014<br \/>\na plane or jet would rumble by<br \/>\nand we\u2019d all look up from stick-ball or bike-tag<br \/>\n(in the streets we played) into a cobalt-bluish sky<br \/>\nand not a whiff or puff of white plumes feathered<br \/>\nimaginations put on hold\u2014<br \/>\nwondering at the ethereal present.<\/p>\n<p>That momentary, present thing<br \/>\nis now a memory distilled.<br \/>\nThe only thing concerned us then<br \/>\nwas being blown to smithereens<br \/>\nby crazy Russians who had once been friends<br \/>\n(so our fathers said) when we fought the Nazis<br \/>\nor the \u201cJaps\u201d (that\u2019s what they said!<br \/>\nBut now you can\u2019t say anything<br \/>\nunless it\u2019s stamped \u201cP.C.-Approved\u201d!)<\/p>\n<p>Which kind of limits thinking through<br \/>\nmuch of anything that isn\u2019t true<br \/>\nor false or in-between.<br \/>\nI know we hadn\u2019t always such<br \/>\nimbroglios and bears to bear!<\/p>\n<p><strong>They tell me just to pay my dues,<\/strong><br \/>\nkeep my nose clean, vote,<br \/>\nand learn by rote<br \/>\nsome simple rules to see me through:<br \/>\nTrust in God and the Pill-machine<br \/>\n(when feeling blue)<br \/>\nto keep disgusting bugs at bay;<br \/>\npay my taxes with a smile<br \/>\n(because I\u2019m good!), question not<br \/>\nsome little snot<br \/>\nwho wants to kill some enemies<br \/>\nover there before they\u2019re here,<br \/>\nstealing everything we\u2019ve got.<br \/>\n(But it seems his hand is in the slot-<br \/>\nmachine and the game is fixed,<br \/>\nand I think I\u2019m being politicked&#8211;<br \/>\nif I pause to think at all).<\/p>\n<p>Better keep myself to myself.<br \/>\nI\u2019m far too small to understand<br \/>\nwhat all the big and powerful<br \/>\ntell each other when the lights are low,<br \/>\ngushing that they know, they know.<\/p>\n<p>And they\u2019re laughing all the goddamn way<br \/>\nto their bank accounts in foreign lands<br \/>\n(probably some Switzerlands!)<br \/>\nwhile telling me to be content<br \/>\nwith all the residue<br \/>\nof what was once a sky so blue<br \/>\nit hurt to ever think of losing.<br \/>\n_________________________________<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em>Gary Corseri<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>has published novels, poetry collections, dramas and articles.
