{"id":6721,"date":"2010-08-09T00:00:06","date_gmt":"2010-08-08T22:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=6721"},"modified":"2010-08-06T19:49:56","modified_gmt":"2010-08-06T17:49:56","slug":"please-sign-the-petition-to-release-mordechai-vanunu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2010\/08\/please-sign-the-petition-to-release-mordechai-vanunu\/","title":{"rendered":"Please Sign the Petition to Release Mordechai Vanunu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Please express your support for this letter by signing this petition<\/em><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/humanrights.change.org\/petitions\/view\/release_mordechai_vanunu\" title=\"http:\/\/humanrights.change.org\/petitions\/view\/release_mordechai_vanunu CTRL + Click to follow link\"  target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/humanrights.change.org\/petitions\/view\/release_mordechai_vanunu<\/a><\/div>\n<p><em>The following letter has been sent by Mairead Maguire-Nobel Peace Laureate and Gerry Grehan- Chair of the Peace People, Northern Ireland, to President Barak Obama, UK Prime Minister David Cameron, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, other world leaders and prominent personalities, to ask for their help in obtaining the lifting of all restrictions on Mordechai Vanunu and for him to be granted freedom to leave Israel. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>28 July 2010<\/p>\n<p>We are writing to you on behalf of a good man, a man of peace and conscience, who was returned to prison for three months on 23 May 2010.<\/p>\n<p>He will not be aware that we are writing this appeal, but we do so in the hope that, with your help, it will produce his freedom, and not (and this we must risk) cause yet more punishment to be inflicted upon him.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday 11 July\u00a0 2010, his brother, Meir, was granted a 30 minute visit.\u00a0 There was a glass window between them and they spoke via the phone.\u00a0 He is held in solitary confinement in the harshest isolation\u00a0wing there is in any Israeli prison.\u00a0 He is in a cell by himself for 24 hours a day, no window except for\u00a0a small wire covered crack at the top of one wall.\u00a0 He has about an hour&#8217;s walk a day in a very tiny yard.\u00a0 He was simply thrown in a cell by the security agents, the door locked, and left to suffer there all alone\u00a0\u00a0 Of course his spirits are down as a result of being put in such harsh, inhuman and cruel conditions again.<\/p>\n<p>He is Mordechai Vanunu the Israeli nuclear whistle blower.\u00a0 In October l986, Vanunu told the world that Israel had a Nuclear Weapons Programme. \u00a0He was kidnapped and given 18 years imprisonment for espionage and treason.\u00a0 Twenty four\u00a0years later he continues to be punished.\u00a0 In the Jewish Scriptures there is great emphasis on\u00a0justice and freedom.\u00a0\u00a0 He\u00a0served the full 18 years of his sentence (twelve years in solitary confinement,\u00a0described by\u00a0Amnesty International as &#8220;cruel, inhuman and degrading&#8221;).\u00a0 Upon\u00a0his release, the Israeli Government put severe restrictions upon him, including forbidding him to leave Israel and speak to the\u00a0foreign media.\u00a0 It was the breaking of these restrictions, in summer 2004, by speaking to the foreign media, (mainly a long interview to the BBC), which resulted in\u00a0his being returned to solitary confinement\u00a0again this May.<\/p>\n<p>Last month\u00a0Amnesty International declared him a prisoner of conscience and called on the Israeli authorities to lift the restrictions immediately.\u00a0 <strong>&#8220;The restrictions on Mordechai Vanunu arbitrarily limit his rights to freedom of movement, expression and association and are therefore in breach of international law.\u00a0 They should be lifted and he should be allowed to start his life again as a free man.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Mordechai Vanunu should not be in prison at all, let alone be held in solitary confinement in a unit intended for violent criminals.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0He suffered immensely when he was held in solitary confinement for 11 years after his imprisonment in 1986 and to return him to such conditions now is nothing less than cruel, inhuman or degrading.&#8221; \u00a0<em>18 June 2010 Amnesty International<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yet, when he is released from prison he will still have to remain in Israel and the restrictions will be reviewed and probably renewed yet again, as they have been renewed each year for the past 6 years.<\/p>\n<p>Vanunu is seen as a traitor by some, a hero by others.\u00a0\u00a0 One thing is clear, he has been punished and served the full sentence and it is time after 24 years to do the human thing and let him live as a free man.<\/p>\n<p>The Israeli Supreme Court continues to accept the Secret Services&#8217; claims that he\u00a0still has secrets, but a report\u00a0by <strong>Reuters, 20 December 2009<\/strong>,\u00a0shows that he does not\u00a0:<\/p>\n<p><strong> &#8221; &#8230; Yet Uzi Eilam, a retired army brigadier-general who ran the Israeli Atomic Energy Commission between 1976 and 1986, said anything that Vanunu &#8212; a cause c\u00e9l\u00e8bre among disarmament campaigners &#8212; might still disclose about Dimona is of little relevance.<\/strong><strong> &#8220;I&#8217;ve always believed he should be let go,&#8221; said Eilam.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> &#8220;I don&#8217;t think he has significant things to reveal (about Dimona) now.&#8221; <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSLDE5BJ0A5\" >http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSLDE5BJ0A5<\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, we believe that he will be free and our hope is that you\u00a0will in some way facilitate his early\u00a0release\u00a0which would be welcomed by a world\u00a0waiting and watching for a peaceful and secure future\u00a0for Israel and its people.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0We would greatly appreciate your advising us of any\u00a0action you take &#8211;\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/mailto:info@peacepeople.com\/\" >info@peacepeople.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Shalom,<br \/>\nMairead Maguire, Nobel Peace Laureate<br \/>\nGerry Grehan,\u00a0Chair of the Peace People<\/p>\n<p>Vanunu has been nominated year after year for the Nobel Peace Prize and received the Right Livelihood Award (the alternative Nobel) along with Prof. Johan Galtung in 1987.<\/p>\n<p>The many prominent names who have called for his release and respect of his human rights over the last 24 years include:<\/p>\n<p>The late Nobel Laureates Joseph Rotblat and Harold Pinter;
