{"id":67399,"date":"2015-12-07T14:05:52","date_gmt":"2015-12-07T14:05:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=67399"},"modified":"2015-12-07T14:06:40","modified_gmt":"2015-12-07T14:06:40","slug":"defense-contractors-cite-benefits-of-escalating-conflicts-in-the-middle-east","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2015\/12\/defense-contractors-cite-benefits-of-escalating-conflicts-in-the-middle-east\/","title":{"rendered":"Defense Contractors Cite \u201cBenefits\u201d of Escalating Conflicts in the Middle East"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>4 Dec 2015 &#8211; <\/em>Major defense contractors Raytheon, Oshkosh, and Lockheed Martin assured\u00a0investors at a\u00a0Credit Suisse conference in\u00a0West Palm Beach this week\u00a0that they stand to gain from the escalating conflicts in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Lockheed Martin Executive Vice President Bruce Tanner told the conference\u00a0his company will see\u00a0\u201cindirect benefits\u201d from the war in Syria, citing the Turkish military\u2019s recent decision to shoot down a Russian\u00a0warplane.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_67400\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Lockheed-Martin-F-35A-Lightning-II.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67400\" class=\"wp-image-67400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Lockheed-Martin-F-35A-Lightning-II.jpg\" alt=\"A Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II\" width=\"700\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Lockheed-Martin-F-35A-Lightning-II.jpg 1440w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Lockheed-Martin-F-35A-Lightning-II-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Lockheed-Martin-F-35A-Lightning-II-1024x512.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-67400\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The incident, Tanner said, heightens the risk for U.S. military operations in the region,\u00a0providing \u201can intangible lift\u00a0because of the dynamics of that environment and our products in theater.\u201d\u00a0He also stressed that the Russian intervention would highlight the need for Lockheed Martin-made F-22s\u00a0and the new F-35 jets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And for \u201cexpendable\u201d products, such as a rockets, Tanner added that there is increased demand, including from the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia because of the war in Yemen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Wilson Jones, the president of the defense manufacturer Oshkosh, told the conference that \u201cwith the ISIS threat growing,\u201d there are more countries interested in buying Oshkosh-made M-ATV armored vehicles. Speaking about a recent business trip to the Middle East, Jones said countries there \u201cwant to mechanize their infantry corps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Raytheon Chief Executive Tom Kennedy made similar remarks, telling the conference that he is seeing \u201ca significant uptick\u201d for \u201cdefense solutions across the board in multiple countries in the Middle East.\u201d Noting that he had met with King Salman of Saudi Arabia, Kennedy said, \u201cIt\u2019s all the turmoil they have going on, whether the turmoil\u2019s occurring in Yemen, whether it\u2019s with the Houthis, whether it\u2019s occurring in Syria or Iraq, with ISIS.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The last bit of good news for the contractors is the latest budget deal in Congress.
