(AP Photo\/Allen)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>18 Dec 2015 &#8211; <\/em>American colleges such as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/yale-halloween-costumes-offensive-free-speech_563e3f9ce4b0b24aee4a8fef\" >Yale<\/a>\u00a0University and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/protests-university-of-missouri_56401af5e4b0307f2cade647\" >The University of Missouri<\/a>\u00a0aren&#8217;t the only ones experiencing a wave of student protests against institutional racism. In South Africa, the #RhodesMustFall movement started in March 2015, when students at the University of Cape Town protested and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2015\/04\/13\/south-africa-statue-prote_n_7055798.html\" >helped to remove<\/a> a statue of the British imperialist Cecil Rhodes.<\/p>\n<p>Now Rhodes Must Fall has made its way to England, where students at Oxford University&#8217;s Oriel College have\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/education-35123199\" >convinced their school to take down a plaque<\/a> commemorating Cecil Rhodes.<\/p>\n<p>Rhodes was a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Cecil-Rhodes\" >mining magnate<\/a> and ardent advocate of colonialism who founded the colonial territory of &#8220;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sahistory.org.za\/people\/cecil-john-rhodes\" >Rhodesia<\/a>,&#8221;\u00a0now Zimbabwe and Zambia. He was a student at Oriel College, Oxford between 1873 and 1881, and left <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oriel.ox.ac.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/Oriel%20College%20press%20statement%20on%20the%20Rhodes%20Must%20Fall%20in%20Oxford%20campaign.pdf\" >2 percent of his income<\/a> to the College upon his death in 1902. He also endowed Oxford with the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship, which has allowed nearly <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk\/rhodesscholarship\/about-the-rhodes-scholarships\" >8,000 international students<\/a>\u00a0to study at the University.<\/p>\n<p>The plaque, which has\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oriel.ox.ac.uk\/content\/statement-oriel-college-about-issues-raised-rhodes-must-fall-oxford-petition\" >been on the campus since 1906<\/a>, was removed thanks to a petition from Rhodes Must Fall In Oxford,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/education-35123199\" >the BBC reports<\/a>. An\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oriel.ox.ac.uk\/content\/statement-oriel-college-about-issues-raised-rhodes-must-fall-oxford-petition\" >official statement<\/a>\u00a0released by Oriel College on Thursday identifies Cecil Rhodes as &#8220;a 19th-century colonialist whose values and world view stand in absolute contrast to the ethos of the Scholarship programme today, and to the values of a modern University.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Oriel College&#8217;s statement said that &#8220;the historical fact of Rhodes\u2019s bequest to the College does not suggest celebration of his unacceptable views and actions,&#8221; and said they are committed to improve the &#8220;representation and experience of BME (Black and Minority Ethnic) students and staff.&#8221; The college also said they will conduct further outreach with BME students and would fundraise for graduate scholarships for African study.\u00a0The college will also conduct a\u00a0&#8220;six-month listening exercise&#8221; to hear from students and faculty as to what to do with the statue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/CecilRhodes-BiblioArchivesLibraryArchives-flickr-490x315.jpg\"  rel=\"attachment wp-att-67786\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-67786\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/CecilRhodes-BiblioArchivesLibraryArchives-flickr-490x315-300x193.jpg\" alt=\"CecilRhodes-BiblioArchivesLibraryArchives-flickr-490x315\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/CecilRhodes-BiblioArchivesLibraryArchives-flickr-490x315-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/CecilRhodes-BiblioArchivesLibraryArchives-flickr-490x315.jpg 490w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>On Facebook, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Rhodes-Must-Fall-In-Oxford-1599672910303410\/\" >Rhodes Must Fall In Oxford<\/a> celebrated the plaque&#8217;s removal, but criticized the delay on the statue decision, saying, &#8220;We reiterate that universities are no places for genocidal colonialists, or any other such toxic figures.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Daisy Chandley, a first-year student at Oxford&#8217;s Mansfield College and a member of Rhodes Must Fall In Oxford, expressed cautious optimism about the plaque&#8217;s removal and said she is\u00a0&#8220;glad that Oriel\u2019s statement is somewhat less apologist than their <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oriel.ox.ac.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/Oriel%20College%20press%20statement%20on%20the%20Rhodes%20Must%20Fall%20in%20Oxford%20campaign.pdf\" >previous statements<\/a> and interactions with us.&#8221; Regarding the listening exercise, she told The Huffington Post, &#8220;We believe the allocation of six months for this is excessive, and reject such a time frame.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ntokozo Qwabe, a South African Rhodes Scholar and another RMF member, said the group will continue to push for the statue&#8217;s total removal during the next semester.
