{"id":69283,"date":"2016-02-01T12:00:45","date_gmt":"2016-02-01T12:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=69283"},"modified":"2016-02-01T11:56:44","modified_gmt":"2016-02-01T11:56:44","slug":"that-guy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2016\/02\/that-guy\/","title":{"rendered":"That Guy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If I come back to earth as a movie star,<br \/>\nI want to be that guy nobody knows.<br \/>\nYou know who I mean, don&#8217;t you?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As a young man, he gets slapped around by Bogie<br \/>\nin <em>The Maltese Falcon. <\/em><br \/>\nHe&#8217;s Sidney Longstreet&#8217;s punk and foil.<br \/>\nHe&#8217;s got a pug nose and he makes you<br \/>\nwant to rub him out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In <em>Shane<\/em>, he&#8217;s the sheepherder<br \/>\nwho goes face-to-ugly-face with Jack Palance.<br \/>\nPalance plugs him, and his stupid little body<br \/>\njerks in the muddy street.<br \/>\nYou can&#8217;t even feel sorry for him&#8211;<br \/>\nhe&#8217;s such a dolt!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Years later, he turns up in a Vincent Price<br \/>\nlow-budget horror movie<br \/>\nand you can&#8217;t wait until the little dweeb<br \/>\ngets his spine ripped out<br \/>\nby the monster.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">He&#8217;s in a couple of hundred other movies<br \/>\nthat no one remembers.<br \/>\n(The Film Preservation Society refuses to preserve them!)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I want to be that guy because<br \/>\nhe is the greatest actor who ever lived&#8211;<br \/>\nthe anonymous Everyman taking the hard knocks<br \/>\nfor all of us,<br \/>\nthe guy who makes the hero look good,<br \/>\nthe heroine look smart for turning him down.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">He&#8217;s the first to get killed in the war<br \/>\nand the guy nobody misses.<br \/>\n(One slack-eyed G.I., longing for Betty Grable,<br \/>\nlooks at another and says,<br \/>\n&#8220;Did anybody pull his tags?&#8221;<br \/>\nAnd the other one shrugs and says, &#8220;Whose?&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I&#8217;d like to come back and be that guy<br \/>\nbecause then I would know in my human skin<br \/>\nwhat it means to be lost and ordinary&#8211;<br \/>\nlike a hungry kid anywhere without a name&#8211;,<br \/>\nor to fall down bloody in a muddy street<br \/>\nwhile the slick gunfighter laughs<br \/>\nand we all laugh in the dark.<br \/>\n<strong>_____________________________________<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Gary Corseri <\/em><em>has performed his work at the Carter Presidential Library, and his dramas have been produced on <\/em>PBS-Atlanta<em> and elsewhere.
