And now, Copenhagen-based container architecture\u00a0firm <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cphcontainers.dk\/contact.html\" >CPH Shelter<\/a>\u00a0and architect S\u00f8ren Nielsen, a partner at Danish firm Vandkunsten Architects, have designed the \u201cCPH Village,\u201d a planned shipping container structure aimed to help solve the area\u2019s student housing shortage.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Not too shabby for a shipping container!<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/hek3gseyQb\" >https:\/\/t.co\/hek3gseyQb<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Stonehealth Ltd (@Stonehealth) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Stonehealth\/status\/697370817726906368?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >February 10, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The CPH Village project is an offshoot of the company\u2019s standalone <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cphcontainers.dk\/cphshelter\/\" >CPH Shelter<\/a>, an easily transportable \u201cplug and play\u201d unit that can be customized easily and inexpensively. For instance, a single house can be merged, divided or reshaped over time to family or senior housing.<\/p>\n<p>The CPH designers can certainly\u00a0turn an old\u00a0box into\u00a0something livable,\u00a0as\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/781575\/cph-containers-designs-transportable-student-village-to-solve-copenhagens-housing-shortage\" >Arch Daily<\/a>\u00a0wrote:<\/p>\n<p>The unit\u2019s central room is created by cutting a 40-foot container in two halves and pulling them two meters apart, creating a large living area flanked by two niches for the bedroom and bathroom. The bedroom alcove faces the living room and features a daybed that can be used as seating and sleeping, thereby saving the space traditionally dissolved by the redundant functions of a sofa and a bed.<\/p>\n<p>The homes itself are built from up-cycled materials and comes furnished with a kitchen, bath and integrated and multi-functional cabinet and storage space. Photo credit: CPH Shelter<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Because there is no need to dig a foundation and can be disassembled and reassembled, the homes are ideal for temporary, or even permanent, university housing.<\/p>\n<p>CPH Shelter has a 80 percent lower CO2 footprint in the production phase than traditional buildings, the company boasts on their website.<\/p>\n<p>The CPH Village project will be launched later this year.\u00a0\u201cOur effort to create cheap, flexible and sustainable colleges have taken a big leap forward,\u201d the company wrote on a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cphshelter\/posts\/1622984621295453\" >Facebook post<\/a>\u00a0in November 2015. \u201cYesterday the city council of Copenhagen unanimously agreed to ask the Danish government to adjust the Planning Act and make it possible to construct temporary student residences in urban perspective areas\u2014eg. Refshale\u00f8en or Nordhavn in Copenhagen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government will present their proposals for a new Planning Act early 2016. In Amsterdam, The Wenckehof\u2014which consists of 1,000 shipping containers converted into housing for students\u2014is the largest development of its kind, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/cities\/2015\/oct\/09\/living-steel-box-shipping-containers-future-housing\" >The Guardian<\/a> reported in\u00a0October 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Although shipping container homes have\u00a0its <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/773491\/opinion-whats-wrong-with-shipping-container-housing-everything\" >critics<\/a>, advocates tout its\u00a0versatility and affordability.\u00a0One Wenckehof\u00a0resident told The Guardian that he pays is \u20ac450 a month ($505) in rent to live at Wenckehof and also qualifies for a \u20ac140 ($170) monthly housing subsidy, much cheaper than the \u20ac600 ($675) a month that students often pay to share an apartment in central Amsterdam.<\/p>\n<p>For <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/?s=tiny+house\" >tiny home<\/a> aficionados, a repurposed shipping container means living simply and affordably.\u00a0EcoWatch recently featured <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2015\/11\/18\/tiny-house-shipping-containers\/\" >six beautiful tiny homes made out of shipping containers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2016\/02\/13\/shipping-container-homes\/\" >Go to Original \u2013 ecowatch.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From Berlin to Bangalore to London, people all over are shacking up in shipping containers.
