The methods used to undermine Shaaban&#8217;s message should come as no surprise.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/lateline\/content\/2015\/s4405058.htm\" >interview<\/a> was typical of the infrequent times corporate media has bothered to interview Dr. Shaaban: loaded lexicon, pre-priming the audience with false allegations about the Syrian government, repeatedly cutting-off the high-ranking guest, and a notably rude and condescending demeanor not afforded to guests who tow the NATO narrative on Syria.<\/p>\n<p>As with other top Syrian representatives, Shaaban is made out to be <em>\u201cnon-credible\u201d<\/em> by corporate media pundits when they deign to interview her. They actively work to discredit Syrian officials while at the same time putting forth claims that Wahhabi terrorists are <em>\u201crebels\u201d<\/em> and <em>\u201cSyrian representatives\u201d<\/em> and those warring on Syria are <em>\u201cconcerned\u201d<\/em> about widespread suffering in the country.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_70728\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/syria.jpg\"  rel=\"attachment wp-att-70728\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70728\" class=\"wp-image-70728\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/syria.jpg\" alt=\"\u00a9 Diaa Al-Din \/ Reuters\" width=\"700\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/syria.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/syria-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/syria-768x427.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-70728\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 Diaa Al-Din \/ Reuters<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Sanctions: It is the Syrian People Who Are Suffering<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Shaaban emphasized the Syrian realities at a meeting in her office in December.<\/p>\n<p>A crucially-important issue that media pundits ignore is that of the crippling sanctions on Syria. In terms of how to provide actual relief to the Syrian people, Dr. Shaaban stated:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe first thing the West should do in this battle against terrorism is to lift the sanctions from the Syrian people. The sanctions are helping terrorists against the Syrian people, who are suffering doubly from the terrorists and from Western measures against the Syrian people.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Stephen Gowans recently\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gowans.wordpress.com\/2016\/02\/10\/what-us-congress-researchers-reveal-about-washingtons-designs-on-syria\/\" >wrote<\/a> about the US government\u2019s long-time plans to topple the Syrian government, sanctions being one part of the plot.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cDocuments prepared by US Congress researchers as early as 2005 revealed that the US government was actively weighing regime change in Syria. &#8230;As an alternative to direct military intervention to topple the Syrian government, the United States chose to pressure Damascus through sanctions and support for the internal Syrian opposition.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_70729\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/syria2.jpg\"  rel=\"attachment wp-att-70729\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70729\" class=\"wp-image-70729\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/syria2.jpg\" alt=\"\u00a9 Mohammed Badra \/ Reuters\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/syria2.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/syria2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/syria2-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-70729\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 Mohammed Badra \/ Reuters<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The advocacy website, End The Sanctions on Syria, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/endthesanctions.com\/\" >notes<\/a>: <em>\u201cSimilar sanctions on Iraq in the 1990s were shown to have caused the deaths of more than half a million Iraqi children.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The site went on to report that (as of May 2014), <em>\u201c701 of 1,921 Syrian health centres have been \u2018completely gutted\u2019 by the terrorist attacks. Yet rehabilitation of these centres is retarded by the US-EU sanctions, which have already left \u2018a deep mark on the healthcare system\u2019&#8230; including by blocking access to medicines, medical equipment, transport and communications.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A May 27, 2015 article in The Lancet <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/langlo\/article\/PIIS2214-109X%2815%2900046-7\/fulltext?rss=yes#back-bib4\" >reports<\/a>:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cThe cost of basic food items has risen six-fold since 2010, although it varies regionally. With the exception of drugs for cancer and diabetes, Syria was 95 percent self-sufficient in terms of drug production before the war. This has virtually collapsed as have many hospitals and primary health-care centres.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Economic sanctions have not removed the President: &#8230;only civilians are in the line of fire, attested to by the dire state of household and macro-economies. Sanctions are among the biggest causes of suffering for the people of Syria.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/RT_com\/status\/668312526732566528\/photo\/1?ref_src=twsrc^tfw<\/p>\n<p><strong>Western Contradictions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From 2011 to May 2014, Russia (as well as China) has used its veto\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/research.un.org\/en\/docs\/sc\/quick\" >four times<\/a> against unjust UN Security Council draft Resolutions against Syria. In September 2015, upon request of the Syrian government, Russian fighter planes entered Syrian airspace, from the start doing what the US-led coalition had purported it would do:\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/21stcenturywire.com\/2015\/10\/05\/isis-on-the-run-russian-airstrikes-totally-obliterate-terrorist-forces-in-just-72-hours\/\" >targeting<\/a> terrorist hotbeds in Syria.<\/p>\n<p>Although continually\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/21stcenturywire.com\/2015\/09\/30\/anti-putin-propaganda-begins-moderate-terrorists-complain-russia-bombed-them\/\" >vilified<\/a> in Western media, Russia\u2019s\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/sputniknews.com\/politics\/20160223\/1035203324\/syria-russia-airstrike-campaign.html\" >requested<\/a> and welcomed intervention in Syria complements their consistent anti-Western-intervention stance.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, in the year and a half that the US-led coalition has been illegally\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/op-edge\/323396-unsc-isis-syria-us\/\" >violating<\/a> Syrian skies, they\u2019ve done little to stop terrorists\u2019 movements and have repeatedly <em>\u201caccidentally\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/landdestroyer.blogspot.ru\/2014\/10\/us-helping-isis-one-accidental-airdrop.html\" >dropped<\/a> supplies to terrorist factions, while terrorists\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.globalresearch.ca\/obamas-fake-war-against-the-islamic-state-isis-the-islamic-state-is-protected-by-the-us-and-its-allies\/5432163\" >transit<\/a> through hundreds of miles of open desert, thereby prolonging the otherwise-real fight against terrorism being waged by the Syrian army and allies.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_70730\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/syria3.jpg\"  rel=\"attachment wp-att-70730\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70730\" class=\"wp-image-70730\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/syria3.jpg\" alt=\"\u00a9 Bassam Khabieh \/ Reuters\" width=\"700\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/syria3.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/syria3-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/syria3-768x427.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-70730\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 Bassam Khabieh \/ Reuters<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On Western diplomacy, Dr. Shaaban remarked:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe contradictory statements coming from the West are puzzling, to say the least. Even when he (US Secretary of State John Kerry) said <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/bigstory.ap.org\/article\/becc6476f40f49a4ad7c5b1034690955\/syrian-troops-capture-strategic-mountain-coastal-province\" >we are not seeking regime change<\/a>, the US ambassador at the UN (Samantha Powers) said President Assad had to go. Then, Kerry gave a statement in the Security Council that he agreed with Russia that it is up to the Syrian people to decide their destiny and their government. Then President Obama comes and says, no, President Assad has to go.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Indeed, aside from being immoral and criminal, the various statements and actions of Western leaders are borderline-schizophrenic.<\/p>\n<p>Obama has flip-flopped on his <em>\u201cAssad must go\u201d<\/em> position, his latest declaration\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.presstv.com\/Detail\/2016\/02\/26\/452377\/Obama-Assad\/?fb_action_ids=10204344280046435&amp;fb_action_types=og.shares&amp;fb_source=other_multiline&amp;action_object_map=%5b971198809617053%5d&amp;action_type_map=%5b%22og.shares%22%5d&amp;action_ref_map=%5b%5d\" >alleging<\/a> peace will not come <em>\u201cuntil Assad is out of power\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter and Vice President Joe Biden have both flexed military muscles, saying America is ready to take <em>\u201cdirect action on the ground\u201d<\/em> in Syria and ready for a\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/featured\/news\/869766\" >\u201cmilitary solution\u201d<\/a> in Syria.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, on February 9, 2016, State Department Spokesperson, John Kirby, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/m.state.gov\/md252298.htm#SYRIA\" >pledged<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThere\u2019s not going to be a military solution to this conflict. &#8230; It has to be solved politically. And more importantly, it has to be solved by Syrians.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Kerry, in his most absurd Kerry-ism yet, is reiterating the <em>\u201cmust go\u201d<\/em> line and waffling on about a <em>\u201cPlan B\u201d<\/em> and a <em>\u201cpartition\u201d<\/em> of Syria.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ruptly\/status\/705101730933927936?ref_src=twsrc^tfw<\/p>\n<p>On the inconsistency of American leaders\u2019 positions on Syria, Dr. Shaaban told me:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Here is the difference between them and Russia. If you take the statements of Putin or Lavrov from the beginning of the crisis until now, you find them consistent, in line with each other. You find them coming from a stand against terrorism, that countries have sovereignties, and that it is the people of these countries who should decide the future of the country, with no foreign intervention. All of their stands are in line with international legitimacy and with UN resolutions.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>That&#8217;s why the stand of the Russians, for us, is a noble stand. As Putin said, they are defending the national security of Russia and Syria, which is true.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Turkey: Warring on Syria<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThere&#8217;s no dialogue between us and Turkey, none at all. Turkey continues to support terrorism in Syria. If you imagine a Syria without an 800 km border with Turkey, these terrorists could not have come to Syria. Turkey is an accomplice in this war on Syria.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In Iraq, Turkey withdrew, because President Obama called Erdogan to withdraw from Iraq. This also shows that when the United States wants them to stop, they stop,\u201d<\/em> Shaaban said.<\/p>\n<p>A recent article on Consortium News emphasized precisely this point:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe U.S. traditionally has held tremendous power over client states like Turkey and Saudi Arabia. So, an order from Washington is usually enough to get such governments to back down.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Referencing Turkey\u2019s recent shelling of Azaz in Aleppo, it noted:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTurkey\u2019s attacks also are aimed at preventing the Syrian government from sealing the Turkish border where the Islamic State and other jihadist groups have smuggled across fighters, weapons and other supplies into Syria \u2013 as well as oil from Syria into Turkey.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to Dr. Shaaban, <em>\u201cWestern countries keep silent about Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, because these are the three countries which are financing, arming and facilitating terrorism into our country.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Our people are the victims of this terrorism&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On December 13, the day I arrived in Syria, terrorists rained more mortars than usual on Damascus. I asked Dr. Shaaban the pointedly rhetorical question of whether Western leaders condemned this or other terrorist acts in Syria.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNobody speaks about mortars hitting our cities, our civilians. These missiles are hitting our schools, our hospitals, and people on the street. They are not targeting the army.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Many countries have the technology which could detect these mortars and save the lives of civilians. But with the sanctions being imposed on Syria, nobody will give us this technology.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>She cited the December 17, 2015 passing of UNSC Resolution #2253, on halting the financing and support of terrorism, emphasizing, <em>\u201cThere are so many resolutions before that: 2170, 2178, 2199.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The latest, a 28-page resolution, <em>\u201ccovers asset freeze, travel ban, arms embargo and listing criteria for ISIL, Al-Qaida and associated individuals, groups, undertaking and entities,\u201d<\/em> the UN\u2019s press release noted. However, given that the US itself continues to arm terrorists, it is likely this last resolution will not have the desired effect of truly stopping terrorism in Syria.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOur people are the victims of this terrorism. Syria is a secular country, so many ethnicities and religions have lived peacefully together for thousands of years. Syria is an example of tolerance, of love,\u201d<\/em> Dr. Shaaban observed, before imploring Western people <em>&#8220;to understand that in Syria, mothers, children, fathers, grandchildren&#8230; people, like any people in the world, would like to live in peace and security and are suffering from terrorism.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Syria refuses to surrender<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just before leaving Syria last December, I was invited to the Joy Choir\u2019s Christmas concert. The day prior, President al-Assad and First Lady Asma al-Assad visited the practising choir. Photos and videos of the event evidence the choir\u2019s delight at the drop-in. The following evening, the church was so packed that lines of hopeful attendees spilled onto the sidewalk. I mentioned this to Dr. Shaaban.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI saw the photos. This is something that you cannot fabricate. You can see from their faces how happy they were,\u201d<\/em> Shaaban replied.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI&#8217;m very proud of our people. Because President Assad went there the night before, you could expect that some people would be afraid to go, because it might be targeted by the terrorists. Yet the church was crowded. The people were determined to be there, whether it got targeted or not.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Notre Dame de Damas Church is indeed in close proximity to the terrorist-occupied area of Jobar, which regularly fire mortars, hell-cannons, and rockets on Damascus.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis is the merit of the Syrian people. They do not fear death. The world wants to destroy us, and the Syrian people are saying \u2018no\u2019 in every kind of way. When there is a terrorist missile, for example on Bab Touma, immediately after, people are out on the streets. We refuse to die. We refuse to surrender,\u201d Shaaban emphasized.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Indeed, on my\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/dissidentvoice.org\/2015\/12\/christmas-magic-in-terror-ravaged-syria\/\" >December visit<\/a> to various parts of Homs, including the Old City, there was evidence of the pulse of life: new shops and stalls opened; homes and restaurants rehabilitated.<\/p>\n<p>A more recent example of this resilience involves the terror-bombed and ravaged neighborhood of al-Zahra\u2019a in Homs, which I also visited in December. Tragically, it has been hit by terrorists\u2019 car and suicide bombings three more times since the December 12th triple-blast bombings. After one of the more recent terror attacks, Dr. Shaaban noted on her Facebook page (translated from Arabic):<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cMy brothers live in this neighborhood and when I called them they told me that the streets have been cleaned and shops opened and people continued their work.
