{"id":7077,"date":"2010-09-06T00:00:52","date_gmt":"2010-09-05T22:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=7077"},"modified":"2011-03-28T17:56:47","modified_gmt":"2011-03-28T15:56:47","slug":"japanese-hunt-dolphins-into-the-cove-once-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2010\/09\/japanese-hunt-dolphins-into-the-cove-once-more\/","title":{"rendered":"Japanese Hunt Dolphins into the Cove, Once More"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Activists protest start of annual chase, which locals see as a cultural event.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One Japanese coastal village, whose annual dolphin hunt was made famous in the Oscar-winning documentary <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B002PLMJ74\/?tag=nwswk-20\"  target=\"_blank\">The Cove<\/a><\/em>, opened this year&#8217;s season on Friday by reportedly herding together 20 of the mammals while opponents ramped up protests against the practice.<\/p>\n<p>Residents of Taiji hunt dolphins and whales for food annually, and sell <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/hosted.ap.org\/dynamic\/stories\/A\/AS_JAPAN_DOLPHIN_HUNT?SITE=COBOU&amp;SECTION=HOME&amp;TEMPLATE=DEFAULT\" >what the Associated Press calls<\/a> &#8220;the best-looking&#8221; ones to zoos and aquariums. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/tag\/japan.html\" >Japan<\/a>&#8216;s government has set a yearly quota of 20,000, and argues that the killings and captures are no different from raising pigs and cows. The hunt is not subject to international antiwhaling laws.<\/p>\n<p>But dolphin campaigners, including Rick O&#8217;Barry, the former Flipper trainer who starred in <em>The Cove<\/em>, say the practice is barbaric. Protesters, including O&#8217;Barry, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2010\/sep\/02\/cove-star-stages-dolphin-protest\" >gathered in Tokyo this week<\/a> to mark the September 1 start of the season. They presented a petition with 1.7 million signatures to the U.S. embassy there, in an apparent attempt to persuade President Obama to lobby for their cause when he visits Japan in November, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/afp\/article\/ALeqM5h0KFUDepdeZRZ6yLCbWEGFoAkw9g\" >according to Agence-France Presse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The protesters were warned not to travel to Taiji after threats by a Japanese nationalist group with a tendency for violence. Many Japanese see the hunt as an important cultural event, and say <em>The Cove<\/em> was anti-Japanese.\u00a0&#8220;Police have warned me that, if I went, there would be violence,&#8221; O&#8217;Barry told AFP. &#8220;We don&#8217;t want to provoke violence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Watched by activists with the group Sea Shepherd, a fleet of six boats left Taiji at 5.30 a.m. Thursday, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/search.japantimes.co.jp\/cgi-bin\/nn20100903a9.html\" >according to the <em>Japan Times<\/em><\/a>, with hunters soon spotting a pod of about 20 dolphins and, according to AP, herding them into the cove.<\/p>\n<p>When the eyes of the world are not on them, the hunters typically select the best dolphins to sell, and harpoon the others &#8220;until the waters turn red with blood,&#8221; according to AP. This year a village official told the news agency that some fine examples had been kept for sale and the rest set free.
