{"id":74473,"date":"2016-06-06T12:00:29","date_gmt":"2016-06-06T11:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=74473"},"modified":"2017-05-09T15:53:17","modified_gmt":"2017-05-09T14:53:17","slug":"5-of-the-worst-atrocities-carried-out-by-the-british-empire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2016\/06\/5-of-the-worst-atrocities-carried-out-by-the-british-empire\/","title":{"rendered":"5 of the Worst Atrocities Carried Out by the British Empire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\"><em>A YouGov poll found 43 per cent of Brits thought the British Empire was a good thing, while 44 per cent were proud of Britain&#8217;s history of colonialism.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/boer-concentration-camp-uk-eu-empire.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-74475\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/boer-concentration-camp-uk-eu-empire.jpg\" alt=\"boer concentration camp uk eu empire\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/boer-concentration-camp-uk-eu-empire.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/boer-concentration-camp-uk-eu-empire-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>19 Jan 2016 &#8211; <\/em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/british-people-are-proud-of-colonialism-and-the-british-empire-poll-finds-a6821206.html#commentsDiv\" >A new YouGov poll<\/a> has found the British public are generally proud of the British Empire and its colonial past.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">YouGov found 44 per cent were proud of Britain&#8217;s history of colonialism, with 21 per cent regretting it happened and 23 per cent holding neither view.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The same poll also found 43 per cent believed the British Empire was a good thing, 19 per cent said it was bad and 25 per cent said it was &#8220;neither&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">At its height in 1922, the British Empire governed a fifth of the world&#8217;s population and a quarter of the world&#8217;s total land area.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Although the proponents of Empire say it brought various economic developments to parts of the world it controlled, critics point to massacres, famines and the use of concentration camps by the British Empire.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>1. Boer concentration camps<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_74474\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Boer-war-eu-uk.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74474\" class=\"wp-image-74474\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Boer-war-eu-uk.jpg\" alt=\"Armed Afrikaners on the veldt near Ladysmith during the second Boer War, circa 1900\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Boer-war-eu-uk.jpg 564w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Boer-war-eu-uk-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-74474\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Armed Afrikaners on the veldt near Ladysmith during the second Boer War, circa 1900<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">During the Second Boer War\u00a0(1899-1902), the British rounded up around a sixth of the Boer population &#8211; mainly women and children &#8211; and detained them in camps, which were <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/blair-told-to-apologise-for-boer-war-1045491.html\" >overcrowded\u00a0and prone to outbreaks of disease, with scant food rations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Of the 107,000 people interned in the camps, 27,927 Boers died, along with an unknown number of black Africans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>2. Amritsar massacre<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_74476\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Amritsar-Massacre-uk-eu.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74476\" class=\"wp-image-74476\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Amritsar-Massacre-uk-eu.jpg\" alt=\"A young visitor looks at a painting depicting the Amritsar Massare at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Amritsar-Massacre-uk-eu.jpg 564w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Amritsar-Massacre-uk-eu-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-74476\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A young visitor looks at a painting depicting the Amritsar Massare at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">When peaceful protesters defied a government order and demonstrated against British colonial rule in Amritsar, India, on 13 April 1919, they were blocked inside the walled Jallianwala Gardens and fired upon by Gurkha soldiers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The soldiers, under the orders of Brigadier Reginald Dyer, kept firing until they ran out of ammunition, killing <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/books\/a-family-man-whose-bloody-disposition-sent-the-british-into-a-spin\/201603.article\" >between 379 and 1,000 protesters<\/a> and injuring another 1,100 within 10 minutes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Brigadier Dyer was later <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/listverse.com\/2014\/02\/04\/10-evil-crimes-of-the-british-empire\/\" >lauded a hero<\/a> by the British public, who raised \u00a326,000 for him as a thank you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>3.
