Photo \u00a9 Global Poetry.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As far away as London, there is a solid tree,<br \/>\na stately tree, I would say, casting a broad shadow<br \/>\non a cool green lawn.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A plaque at the base of the tree tells passers-by<br \/>\nthat the tree was planted by the worshipful Mayor<br \/>\nof Camden, Councillor Mrs. Millie Miller,<br \/>\non August 6, 1967.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It was twenty-two years after the new<br \/>\nU.S. bomb destroyed Hiroshima, killing ordinary people \u2013<br \/>\nmen, women and children \u2013 by blast, fire and radiation.<br \/>\nSome victims were incinerated, leaving only shadows.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">How can a single tree, no matter how solid, bear<br \/>\nthe weight of such memory?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Now, many years later, picnickers laugh and eat<br \/>\ntheir lunches in the shade of the tree.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">_______________________________________<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>David Krieger is founder and president of the <\/em><em>Nuclear Age Peace Foundation<\/em><em>, and a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tpu\/\" >TRANSCEND Network for Peace, Development and Environment<\/a>. <\/em><em>Amongst several of his wide-spanning leadership endeavors in global peacebuilding, he is a founder and a member of the Global Council of Abolition 2000, councilor on the World Future Council, and is the chair of the Executive Committee of the International Network of Engineers and Scientists for Global Responsibility.
