<\/em>The vice-president of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/electronicintifada.net\/tags\/inogs\" >International Network of Genocide Scholars<\/a> has pulled out of the group\u2019s conference at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/electronicintifada.net\/tags\/hebrew-university-jerusalem\" >Hebrew University<\/a> in Jerusalem, following appeals by Palestine solidarity campaigners.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/electronicintifada.net\/tags\/bds-south-africa\" >BDS South Africa<\/a>, an organization supporting the Palestinian call for a boycott of Israel, has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bdssouthafrica.com\/post\/press-statement-professor-adhikari-withdraws-presentation-from-inogs-israel-conference\/\" >announced<\/a> that University of Cape Town professor <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/inogs.com\/executive-board\/\" >Mohamed Adhikari<\/a> had informed it that he has withdrawn his presentation from the conference.<\/p>\n<p>The British genocide scholar Martin Shaw has also announced he is pulling out of the conference, which begins Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, South Africa\u2019s Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation also <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/electronicintifada.net\/blogs\/rania-khalek\/un-genocide-official-warned-not-be-complicit-israels-crimes\" >withdrew<\/a> from the conference, citing concerns about Israel\u2019s violations of Palestinian human rights.<\/p>\n<p>Shaw, who has held <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/martinshaw.org\/about\/\" >appointments<\/a> at several European universities, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/martinshaw.org\/2016\/06\/24\/why-im-not-discussing-genocide-in-jerusalem\/\" >wrote<\/a> that he had decided to respect a boycott campaign which \u201coffers Palestinians the means of applying peaceful international pressure to Israel to reach an equitable settlement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>PACBI, the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel, had <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/electronicintifada.net\/blogs\/rania-khalek\/un-genocide-official-warned-not-be-complicit-israels-crimes\" >urged<\/a> the International Network of Genocide Scholars to move the conference from Jerusalem because of the complicity of Hebrew University and other Israeli institutions in the occupation and dispossession of Palestinians.<\/p>\n<p>Failing that, Palestinians have called on participants, including the UN\u2019s top adviser on genocide <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/electronicintifada.net\/tags\/adama-dieng\" >Adama Dieng<\/a>, to boycott the conference.<\/p>\n<p>At least 270 academics from 19 different countries heeded that call and signed their names to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/pacbi.org\/etemplate.php?id=2781\" >letter<\/a> urging conference organizers \u201cto act in a principled way\u201d and relocate the event to another country.<\/p>\n<p>But both INoGS and the UN\u2019s Dieng have ignored the appeals, a stance Shaw criticized.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would have respected INoGS\u2019 board more if it had responded publicly to the criticisms of the boycotters,\u201d Shaw wrote, \u201cso that this debate, instead of being brought together in this piece, would have taken place between INoGS and those academics who thought it should not go to Jerusalem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the midst of this crisis, genocide scholars cannot ignore the call for boycotting Israel which comes, not from those \u2018singling out\u2019 or \u2018demonizing\u2019 Israel,\u201d Shaw added, \u201cbut from those Palestinian organizations which see it as a more potent weapon for justice than rockets, bombs or knives which harm innocent civilians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is why I am not in Jerusalem,\u201d Shaw concluded.<\/p>\n<p>_________________________________<\/p>\n<p><em>Ali Abunimah &#8211;
