A spokesperson <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2016\/09\/08\/anti-marijuana-campaigns-biggest-donor-chandler-pharma-company\/89981456\/\" >told the Arizona Republic<\/a>\u00a0that Insys opposes the legalization measure, Prop. 205, \u201cbecause it fails to protect the safety of Arizona\u2019s citizens, and particularly its children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Washington Post story on Friday <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/wonk\/wp\/2016\/09\/09\/a-maker-of-deadly-painkillers-is-bankrolling-the-opposition-to-legal-marijuana-in-arizona\/\" >noted<\/a>\u00a0the potential self-interest involved in Insys\u2019s donation.<\/p>\n<p>Investor filings examined by The Intercept confirm the obvious.<\/p>\n<p>Insys\u00a0is currently <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.insysrx.com\/products\/in-development\" >developing<\/a> a product called the Dronabinol Oral Solution, a drug that uses a\u00a0synthetic\u00a0version of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) to alleviate chemotherapy-caused nausea and vomiting. In an early filing related to the dronabinol drug, assessing market concerns and competition, Insys filed a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/1409532\/000119312507185285\/ds1.htm\" >disclosure statement<\/a> with the Securities and Exchange Commission stating plainly that legal marijuana is a direct threat to their product line:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Legalization of marijuana or non-synthetic cannabinoids in the United States could significantly limit the commercial success of any dronabinol product candidate. \u2026 If marijuana or non-synthetic cannabinoids were legalized in the United States, the market for dronabinol product sales would likely be significantly reduced and our ability to generate revenue and our business prospects would be materially adversely affected.<\/p>\n<p>Insys <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/1409532\/000119312507185285\/ds1.htm\" >explains<\/a> in the filing that dronabinol is \u201cone of a limited number of FDA-approved synthetic cannabinoids in the United States\u201d and \u201ctherefore in the United States, dronabinol products do not have to compete with natural cannabis or non-synthetic cannabinoids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company concedes that scientific literature has argued the benefits of marijuana over synthetic dronabinol, and that support for marijuana legalization is growing. In the company\u2019s latest 10-K filing with the SEC, in a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/1516479\/000143774916026220\/insy20151231_10k.htm\" >section<\/a>\u00a0outlining competitive threats, Insys warns that\u00a0several states \u201chave already enacted laws legalizing medicinal and recreational marijuana.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Subsys, the fentanyl spray Insys makes, is used as a fast-acting pain reliever. Fenatyl is an opioid that has made headlines in recent years as the number of Americans overdosing on the drug has skyrocketed. Fenatyl is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/05\/10\/health\/fentanyl-opioid-explainer\/\" >50 times<\/a> stronger than heroin and has been linked to the death of Prince earlier this year. Last month, two Insys executives <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-insys-court-idUSKCN10S2C0\" >pled guilty<\/a> to a pay-for-play scheme to use speakers fees as a way to get doctors to prescribe Subsys.<\/p>\n<p>Marijuana advocates claim that legalized pot has a variety of medical uses, including pain relief.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not the first time pharmaceutical companies have helped bankroll the opposition to marijuana reform. The Community Anti-Drug Coalition of America, a nonprofit that organizes anti-marijuana activism across the country, has long <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/anti-pot-lobbys-big-bankroll\/\" >received<\/a> corporate sponsorship from Purdue Pharma, the makers of Oxycontin, and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, another opioid manufacturer.<\/p>\n<p>J.P.
