Photograph: Eric Rechsteiner

17 Sep 2016 – Japanese authorities have found that half of their millennials are virgins and almost three-quarters of them are single, a fact that has worried authorities because of the demographic challenges currently experienced by the Asian nation that is growing increasingly older, The Japan Times reported on Saturday.

A survey of Japanese people aged 18 to 34 found that 70 percent of unmarried men and 60 percent of unmarried women are not in a relationship. It also found that around 42 percent of men and 44.2 percent of women admitted that they were virgins.

The survey is conducted every five years by the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research and is part of the Japanese government’s efforts to promote marriage among its young adults in order to cope with the alarming shrinking birth rate that has turned Japan in the world’s oldest country.

Almost 30 years ago, in 1987, the numbers were already alarming for authorities. During that time the same survey found that 48.6 percent of men and 39.5 percent of women were unmarried. However in 2010, only 36.2 percent of men and 38.7 percent of women surveyed said they were virgins.

Japan is largely a conservative country in which the institution of marriage remains as very important issue. However, younger generations have shown to have more liberal attitudes that includes discussions on issues like gender equality, individualism and LGBT rights, and less concerned about traditional married life.

Go to Original – telesurtv.net

17 Sep 2016 – A survey of Japanese people aged 18 to 34 found that 70 percent of unmarried men and 60 percent of unmarried women are not in a relationship.
