Photo: Australian Customs<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But Japan has since exempted itself from the court&#8217;s jurisdiction and drawn up new guidelines for whaling, effectively doubling the size of the hunting grounds in the Southern Ocean and the activist group was not able to track the whalers last summer.<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese\u00a0institute for whale research has also <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/national\/eating-whale-japan-style-in-the-name-of-science-20160405-gnyqc0.html\" >run a website to promote whale recipes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Australia <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/federal-politics\/political-news\/australia-joins-95-countries-to-condemn-japans-whale-slaughter-20160907-grayjx.html\" >joined with 95 countries earlier this month<\/a> to condemn Japan&#8217;s resumption of whaling, and the issue is expected to dominate a meeting of\u00a0the International Whaling Commission in Slovenia in October.<\/p>\n<p>Sea Shepherd won&#8217;t yet disclose the top speed of <em>Ocean Warrior<\/em>\u00a0but said it comfortably topped\u00a030 knots\u00a0in\u00a0recent sea trials in the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<p>This speed, the group says, will allow it to catch Japan&#8217;s harpoon ships and it\u00a0can land a helicopter on board, potentially extending its tracking options.<\/p>\n<p>The ship was funded with a charity grant from proceeds of the Dutch postcode lottery, and Sea Shepherd&#8217;s aim is to show Japan killing whales &#8211; and disrupt the slaughter if they can.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Accountability is important,&#8221; said Mr Hammarstedt.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The way that we see it is that the international community has now had two years to ensure that Japan complies with the law. They haven&#8217;t done so.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our position is that the international community has failed the whales, so that gives us no other option than to head down [to the Southern Ocean].&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Ocean Warrior<\/em> is presently on its maiden voyage to Amsterdam for a launch with Dutch lottery and will then sail to Australia in the next month\u00a0to a port to be determined, either Fremantle, Melbourne or Hobart.<\/p>\n<p><em>______________________________________<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Daniel Flitton is senior correspondent for<\/em> The Age <em>covering foreign affairs and politics.
