23 Sep 2016 – <\/em>The Intercept Brasil\u2019s Inacio Vieira yesterday reported<\/a> one of the most significant pieces of evidence yet about the real reason for the impeachment of Brazil\u2019s elected president, Dilma Rousseff.\u00a0Speaking to a group of U.S. business and foreign policy elites, the country\u2019s installed president, Michel Temer, admitted that what triggered the impeachment process was not any supposed \u201cbudgetary crimes,\u201d but rather Dilma\u2019s\u00a0opposition to the neoliberal\u00a0platform of social program cuts and privatization demanded by Temer\u2019s\u00a0party and the big-business interests that fund it.<\/p>\n

But what\u2019s as revealing as\u00a0Temer\u2019s casual acknowledgement of coup-type motives is how Brazil\u2019s large media \u2014 which is united in favor of impeachment \u2014 has completely ignored his comments. Literally not one of Globo\u2019s countless media properties, nor the nation\u2019s largest newspaper, Folha, nor any of the nation\u2019s\u00a0large political magazines have\u00a0even mentioned these stunning and incriminating remarks from the country\u2019s president. They\u2019ve imposed a total blackout. While numerous independent journalists<\/a> and websites<\/a> have reported<\/a> Temer\u2019s admission, none of Brazil\u2019s major media outlets have uttered a word about it.<\/p>\n

The only exception to this wall of silence was a columnist from the right-wing newspaper Estad\u00e3o,\u00a0L\u00facia Guimar\u00e3es,\u00a0who spent several hours on Twitter yesterday completely humiliating herself in a\u00a0spirited\u00a0attempt to deny that Temer actually said this. She began by insinuating that\u00a0The Intercept\u00a0Brasil made a suspicious \u201ccut\u201d<\/a> in the video that altered reality \u2014 basically accusing Vieira of committing fraud without the slightest evidence, all to protect Temer.<\/p>\n

\"lucia1-540x222-estadao-impeachment-temer-dilma\"<\/a>Then, after a\u00a0Folha columnist sent her a link to the full video<\/a>\u00a0showing that nothing was distorted, she nonetheless announced that\u00a0she would\u00a0only believe Temer said this<\/a>\u00a0once she saw\u00a0the drives from each camera simultaneously played, and she added that what made\u00a0the story so\u00a0suspicious was\u00a0that President Temer is a best-selling author of a book on\u00a0constitutional law<\/a>\u00a0who would not say such a thing about impeachment.\u00a0Only once the\u00a0full transcript of Temer\u2019s remarks was posted\u00a0would she finally admit<\/a>\u00a0that he really said it, but rather than retract her false accusations or apologize to\u00a0Vieira and The Intercept Brasil\u00a0for having implied the video was fraudulently edited, she instead\u00a0simply posted the relevant part of Temer\u2019s remarks<\/a>\u00a0without reference to her prior efforts to smear Vieira, as though she were\u00a0the one who discovered and was reporting these comments for the first time. Even once she did\u00a0finally admit the truth about Temer\u2019s remarks, she bitterly claimed that impeachment opponents\u00a0were turning the story into a \u201ccarnival<\/a>\u201d\u00a0and celebrating the revelation.<\/p>\n

Although she was forced into it by virtue of having embarrassed herself, all to defend Temer, at least this Estad\u00e3o columnist acknowledged the existence of this obviously big story. The rest of the large Brazilian media has\u00a0completely ignored it. Just contemplate that: The installed president of the country admits to a room full of oligarchs and imperialists in New York that he and his party impeached the elected president for ideological and policy reasons<\/em>, not because of the stated reasons, and the entire big Brazilian press pretends that it never happened, refuses to inform Brazilians about what the installed president\u00a0admitted, and ignores the huge implications for what this illuminates about\u00a0Dilma\u2019s removal.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a reason Reporters Without Borders dropped Brazil to 104th in its world press freedom rankings<\/a> and denounced the country\u2019s\u00a0large corporate media as a threat to democracy and a free press. As the Brazilian activist Milly Lacombe put it this morning<\/a>: \u201cTemer confesses to the coup, there exists a recording of the confession, and our corporate media hides what he said. Is that sufficient, or do you need more?\u201d Through their disgraceful silence, they just provided one of the most vivid examples yet of the truth of RSF\u2019s denunciations.<\/p>\n
