But opposition to the project is ramping up, too. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2016\/10\/02\/30-arrested-southeast-iowa-pipeline-protest\/91447820\/\" >Thirty people were arrested<\/a> at a pipeline construction site in Iowa on Sunday, and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.siouxlandmatters.com\/news\/local-news\/crowd-gathered-outside-wells-fargo-for-bakken-pipeline-protest\" >demonstrations have also occurred<\/a> outside <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mintpressnews.com\/new-investigation-names-wall-street-banks-behind-3-8-billion-dakota-access-pipeline\/220107\/\" >banks that are financing the project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/UR_Ninja\/status\/781655177669570560?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, travel to and from the main encampment on Standing Rock land remains heavily restricted due to an ongoing blockade of roads led by the National Guard, which was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/articles\/guard-soldiers-activated-amid-dakota-access-pipeline-protests\" >called up last month<\/a> in response to the ongoing native action against the pipeline.<\/p>\n<p>Remy said the National Guard has allowed local law enforcement and the private security hired by Energy Transfer Partners, the company behind the pipeline, \u201cessentially free rein\u201d in harassing and arresting anti-pipeline activists, and it\u2019s widely believed in the camp that the various law enforcement agencies are freely sharing information with security and the pipeline builders.<\/p>\n<p>Remy said there\u2019s about 2,000 people at the Oceti Sakowin Camp, although numbers have fluctuated during a recent bout of rainy weather. As winter approaches, many at the camp are gathering cold weather gear and hope to hold the space for months to come.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There\u2019s no need to bring weapons here\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a member of the camp and community artist, Remy said, \u201cMy role is to take the camp messaging and put it in a creative format to be delivered to the media and the general public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Originally from the Navajo Nation near the Black Mesa of Arizona, Remy was a lead artist on the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mintpressnews.com\/hundreds-gather-wall-off-trump-police-arrest-18-flag-burning-demonstration-rnc-2016\/218688\/\" >\u201cWall Off Trump\u201d demonstration<\/a> at this year\u2019s Republican National Convention, a direct action that expressed the outrage of immigrants and Indigenous peoples at Donald Trump\u2019s proposed \u201cborder wall\u201d with Mexico. They want to paint us as protesters and that we don\u2019t have good our intentions. Our intentions are to protect water for the 18 million people downstream. And we\u2019re not protesters, we\u2019re protectors.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Mainstream media reports have frequently <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.activistpost.com\/2016\/09\/deadstream-media-shows-bias-reporting-violence-at-dakota-access-pipeline-protest.html\" >accused Native American activists of violence<\/a>, but seem reluctant to report on the repression by police <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/361016-police-arrest-dakota-pipeline\/\" >armed with assault weapons<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/kuZcx2zEo4k\" >private security firms unleashing dogs<\/a> against people.<\/p>\n<p>Remy denied that those standing up in opposition to the pipeline have committed or intend to commit acts of violence. He added:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cThere\u2019s no need to bring weapons here. There\u2019s no need for any of us to bring arms to a spiritual movement of this type, that\u2019s not who we are or why we are here. We\u2019re here to protect the resources, not only for us, but for future generations, and everyone downstream along the Missouri River, all the way to the Gulf.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Last week, Remy attended the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-pipeline-nativeamericans-idUSKCN11W0Y6\" >Tribal Nations Conference<\/a>, the eighth and final opportunity for tribal leaders to meet with President Barack Obama and high level officials in his administration.
