Five days<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I didn&#8217;t hear a word&#8230; what about your local<\/em><br \/>\n<em>peace group? Be gentle, do not criticise them,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>they will realise one day \u2013 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>A postcard arrives, stamped from Victoria post office:<br \/>\nat the bottom it reads <em>\u2013<\/em> <em>Oona&#8217;s Mum \u2013<\/em> Along with it<br \/>\nanother packet; I tear brown paper and there is a thick<br \/>\nhand cut card, its edges at places narrowing like London roads<br \/>\nwhere cyclists and cars and buses converge.<\/p>\n<p>In the card, leaves glued from fern, Garry oak, arbutus<br \/>\nand other trees, and her writing next to these reads<br \/>\n<em>\u2013 they are all native to the west coast \u2013<\/em><br \/>\nlike First Nations children who were snatched from<br \/>\ntheir homes by the federal government between<br \/>\n1840 to 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>I write to her every week, but nine days now<br \/>\nI had nothing to speak. Her cards, her parcels always swift:<br \/>\nin three days they travel from BC to London, now in my<br \/>\npost box; opened it before climbing up the seventh floor<br \/>\nafter a crowded humid day in the city.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2013 This is the last message I write&#8230;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Off to Cumberland soon to watch<\/em><br \/>\n<em>descendants of miners sing aloud, read verses<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and lay roses on miners&#8217; graves. <\/em><br \/>\n<em>No access to telephone or computer&#8230; <\/em><br \/>\n<em>no access to the outside world \u2013 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Six days pass and I wonder what I will write<br \/>\nin my next letter, unopened when she switches on<br \/>\nher computer in the study room where she<br \/>\n<em>\u2013 can see the USA from the window \u2013<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps I should write I have stopped doing letters:<br \/>\nwords are not noisy they don&#8217;t travel<br \/>\npast my front door, they are cheap, they are worthless,<br \/>\nthey are ignored.<\/p>\n<p>Spent two weeks writing letters to journalists<br \/>\nof left and centre, telling them of the epidemic in India:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cYou report about rape but no one utters a word<\/em><br \/>\n<em>about Taara who is beaten every night in Delhi<\/em><br \/>\n<em>by her husband and in mornings she walks her<\/em><br \/>\n<em>daughter to school.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Only if my alphabets were as swift<br \/>\nas Victoria post from BC to London; only if a beaten<br \/>\nmother and a child were more important than an<br \/>\nA-list celebrity&#8217;s new born baby.<\/p>\n<p>I give up my indifference to words, my fingers positioned<br \/>\non keyboard, I start typing, I hammer on keys, I write:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cEach morning I flipped the newspaper thinking of you;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>there is nothing that you missed.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>__________________________________<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This poem was longlisted for the Canterbury Festival Poet of the Year 2016 Prize.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Sumeet Grover is the founder of <\/em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.globalpoetry.org\/\" >Global Poetry<\/a><em>, dedicated to creativity, human dignity, dialogue and global citizenship.
