The area is inhabited by Muslim Rohingyas, one of the world\u2019s most persecuted minorities.<\/p>\n<p>The damage was in addition to earlier reports by the human rights group of 430 more flattened buildings, along with evidence of multiple fires from thermal anomaly data.<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, HRW accused the Burmese authorities of \u201cethnic cleansing\u201d against the Rohingyas. The region of Maungdaw, northern Rakhine, is now seeing the biggest upsurge of violence against the minority in four years.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_83290\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/rohingya-burma-myanmar-muslims3.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-83290\" class=\"wp-image-83290\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/rohingya-burma-myanmar-muslims3.jpg\" alt=\"rohingya-burma-myanmar-muslims3\" width=\"700\" height=\"437\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/rohingya-burma-myanmar-muslims3.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/rohingya-burma-myanmar-muslims3-300x187.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-83290\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Assessment of the destruction in Burma<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Soldiers poured into Rakhine after October 9, when an insurgent group of Rohingyas, that the government believes has links to Islamists overseas, launched coordinated attacks on several border guard posts.<\/p>\n<p>Nine police officers and five soldiers were killed and a weapons cache stolen by a group calling themselves the Al-Yakin Mujahidin.<\/p>\n<p>In the resulting crackdown, over 100 people have reportedly been killed, hundreds detained by the military, and at least 30,000 have fled for their lives. It admitted there was widespread burning but blamed it on unspecified \u201cterrorists\u201d. It claimed the total number of damaged buildings was significantly lower, and has forbidden access to the area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we want Burma to do is allow for a UN-assisted investigation into what\u2019s happened on the ground in these districts,\u201d said Phil Robertson, deputy director of HRW\u2019s Asia division.<\/p>\n<p>Aung San Suu Kyi, the former political prisoner who secured a landslide in the November 2015 elections, has been criticised for her silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt raises some fundamental questions over whether they are prepared to be an improvement over what we have seen from the previous government when it comes to Rakhine state,\u201d said Robertson.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Burma: New Wave of Destruction in Rohingya Villages <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6vs5IFm03Y\" >https:\/\/t.co\/6vs5IFm03Y<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Human Rights Watch (@hrw) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hrw\/status\/800526944475447296?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" >November 21, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Some analysts believe the crisis has highlighted the limits of her power as the military still controls the key ministries of Home and Border Affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile unrest is simmering across Burma. On Monday, China said its army was on high alert after armed groups in Burma\u2019s northeastern Shan state attacked military and police posts on their shared border over the weekend, and that it was sheltering fleeing Burmese citizens.<\/p>\n<p>The official Xinhua news agency said there were military and civilian casualties but gave no further details.
