16 Nov 2016 – <\/em>A WALL that will tower more than 3.8 metres is being built in Munich after locals raised fears young refugees would be moving into the area.<\/p>\n

According to The Sun<\/a>, the barrier \u2013 which is higher than the Berlin Wall \u2013 is being built in Neuperlach S\u00fcd to separate the current community from the 160 unaccompanied young migrants moving to a nearby shelter.<\/p>\n

Locals who campaigned for the wall argued that the values of their home would decrease if the refugees remained in the area for an extended period of time.<\/p>\n

They also raised concerns about the noise and behaviour of the refugees.<\/p>\n

The Berlin Wall, which stood at 3.5 metres, is smaller than the new wall and it\u2019s still unclear how far the almost-completed structure will be.<\/p>\n

A local judge of the Administrative Court in Munich permitted the wall, saying the new arrivals should not be able to use the wall for \u201cball throwing games\u201d or other \u201cleisure use\u201d, local news Merkur reported.<\/p>\n

While the wall has been used an example of how Germany\u2019s Chancellor Angela Merkel\u2019s refugee policy is not working, the structure is not supported by the entire community.<\/p>\n

Deputy District chairman Guido Bucholtz said: \u201cI was frightened when I saw this monster of a wall.\u201d<\/p>\n

The wall will reportedly be covered in vines after it is completed.<\/p>\n

One couple told local media: \u201cDonald Trump wants to build a wall for Mexico, and we in Munich Neuperlachbuild one to keep up safe from refugees.\u201d<\/p>\n

Merkel recently admitted that Germany may have failed with its open-door immigration policy, saying: \u201cIf I could, I would go back in time to be better prepared for the refugee crisis in 2015, for which we were rather unprepared.\u201d<\/p>\n

Concerns have also been raised that some asylum seekers who escaped their war-torn countries were returning to their homes for a holiday, despite claiming they needed to flee persecution.<\/p>\n

Germany has accepted more than 1.3 million asylum seekers but has sought to reconsider its policy around migration.<\/p>\n
