Photograph: Dominic Lipinski\/PA<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Presidential candidate Guillermo Lasso says costly asylum no longer justified<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>WikiLeaks founder has been living at London embassy for four and a half years<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>9 Feb 2017 &#8211; <\/em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/julian-assange\" >Julian Assange<\/a> will be given a month\u2019s notice to leave the Ecuadorian embassy if the country\u2019s main opposition candidate wins the presidency in next week\u2019s election.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with the Guardian, Guillermo Lasso, of the rightwing Creo-Suma alliance, said it was time for the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/wikileaks\" >WikiLeaks<\/a> founder to move on because his asylum was expensive and no longer justified.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ecuadorian people have been paying a cost that we should not have to bear,\u201d he said during an interview in Quito. \u201cWe will cordially ask Se\u00f1or Assange to leave within 30 days of assuming a mandate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That possibility is still some way off. In the most recent poll, Lasso is seven points behind the ruling party candidate Len\u00edn Moreno, but the former banker has been gaining ground ahead of the first round of voting on 19 February and is widely tipped to force a runoff.<\/p>\n<p>Even if there is no change in power in Quito, however, it seems increasingly likely that Assange will soon be moving from the cramped embassy in Knightsbridge that has been his refuge for more than four and a half years.<\/p>\n<p>Although the current government has maintained its position of solidarity, all involved have grown increasingly frustrated with a situation that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/ecuador\" >Ecuador<\/a>\u2019s top diplomat described as \u201csomething out of a John le Carr\u00e9 novel\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur staff have been through a lot. There is a human cost,\u201d said the foreign minister, Guillaume Long. \u201cThis is probably the most watched embassy on the planet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>British police and intelligence have kept the embassy under close surveillance since <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/ecuador\" >Ecuador<\/a> granted asylum in June 2012 to prevent Assange\u2019s extradition to Sweden for questioning about a sexual assault accusation.<\/p>\n<p>The South American country accepts the WikiLeaks leader\u2019s argument that the Swedish extradition request was a ruse aimed at eventually getting him into US jurisdiction, where he said he would face political persecution and mistreatment similar to that suffered by whistleblower <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/chelsea-manning\" >Chelsea Manning.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since then, he has not left the building, which has given him less scope for movement than that of many convicted prisoners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a very precarious position,\u201d Long said. \u201cIn terms of his physical comfort we have done all we can \u2026 But there is no access to an outside space. There is no patio or garden so he has mostly spent four and a half years on the first floor of a building in London, where there is not much light, especially in winter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Assange occupies one of four office rooms in the embassy. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/wikileaks\/10376799\/Julian-Assange-my-life-in-the-embassy.html\" >Although he has described a family-like relationship with the staff<\/a> and gets frequent visits from celebrity supporters, tensions occasionally emerge.<\/p>\n<p>During the US presidential election, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2016\/oct\/19\/wikileaks-ecuador-julian-assange-internet-access\" >the foreign ministry temporarily cut its guest\u2019s internet access<\/a> after WikiLeaks acted as a conduit for leaked emails from the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton\u2019s campaign adviser. This suspension followed verbal warnings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to be clear that our sovereign space was not being used for interference in the election of another country,\u201d Long explained.<\/p>\n<p>The foreign minister expressed sympathy for Assange, but also frustration at the slow pace of judicial negotiations with Sweden and the punitive stance of the UK government, which has cut many bilateral ties and is suspected of a hand in the unusually frequent breakdowns of the embassy\u2019s telephone and broadband systems.<\/p>\n<p>But after a long standstill, things have picked up pace.
