{"id":87823,"date":"2017-03-06T12:00:47","date_gmt":"2017-03-06T12:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/?p=87823"},"modified":"2017-03-03T17:38:20","modified_gmt":"2017-03-03T17:38:20","slug":"alice-bin-wonderland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.transcend.org\/tms\/2017\/03\/alice-bin-wonderland\/","title":{"rendered":"Alice bin Wonderland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Or, The Mad Hatters Boston\u00a0Tea Party with Special Guests<\/em><\/p>\n<p>From Boston tea gladness, and McCarthy time madness<br \/>\nto Osama bin badness, and Bush era sadness,<br \/>\nwe try to make sense of the mess that we&#8217;re in.<br \/>\nSeeking reprieve, we try to retrieve<br \/>\nthe hat from the mirror, the rabbit within,<br \/>\nto see if indeed we&#8217;ve learned anything.<\/p>\n<p><em>And there, all the while, near Trade Center towers<\/em><br \/>\n<em>near bombs in the desert like fire work showers,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>the mother still\u00a0 comforts her child: &#8220;Hush little baby, don&#8217;t you cry, <\/em><br \/>\n<em>mama\u2019s gonna sing you a lullaby&#8221;. <\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\nFor my part, I just want to know where Alice hid the card.<br \/>\nYou know, the card with the clue, to what we could do<br \/>\nin this topsy bin turvy, bin saviour,<br \/>\nbin scurvy, bin world, me and you;<br \/>\nMust the cups all be empty and breaking and, gee!<br \/>\nMust their shards tear our flesh?<br \/>\nAll we want is some tea!<br \/>\nThat bothers me!<br \/>\nTell me, where will it all end,<br \/>\nin this Osama bin Ladened,<br \/>\nbin Bushed and bin hardened,<br \/>\nbin holding my breath,<br \/>\nbin domino theoried and\u00a0 brainwashed to death<br \/>\nworld that we\u2019re in.<br \/>\nOh! Where will it end, when there&#8217;s clearly enough &#8212;<br \/>\nin fact one could\u00a0 say, an excess of stuff \u2013<br \/>\nfor all of\u00a0 our needs<br \/>\nin this topsy bin turvy, bin saviour bin scurvy,<br \/>\nbin world that we\u2019re in;<br \/>\nWill it end in the breaking of bread<br \/>\nregardless of creed?<br \/>\nAnd maybe, just maybe&#8230; according to need?<\/p>\n<p><em>And there, all the while, near Trade Center towers<\/em><br \/>\n<em>near bombs in the desert like fire work showers<\/em><br \/>\n<em>the mother still\u00a0 comforts her child: <\/em><br \/>\n<em>&#8220;Hush little baby, don&#8217;t you cry, <\/em><br \/>\n<em>mama\u2019s gonna sing you a lullaby&#8221;. \u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n________________________________________<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>EvelynVoigt<\/em><em> was born a German prisoner of war in what is now Zimbabwe. As a child in Africa, she alternated between running free on an isolated tea and coffee farm and submitting to Dickensian, British-style boarding schools also in Africa. Penning for peace is her passion and she received the Order of the Queen&#8217;s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002. She has performed in Canada and abroad and <\/em><em>has authored\u00a0<\/em>Flying Snakes and Green Turtles, Tanzania Up Close\u00a0<em>and\u00a0<\/em>Letters from Helga<em>.
